{"id":371169,"date":"2026-04-02T12:26:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T12:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/371169\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T12:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T12:26:11","slug":"uk-to-gather-more-than-30-countries-to-discuss-methods-of-reopening-strait-of-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/371169\/","title":{"rendered":"UK to gather more than 30 countries to discuss methods of reopening Strait of Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost three dozen countries will hold a virtual meeting on Thursday in an effort to exert diplomatic and political pressure to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route that has been choked off by Iran after the US and Israel struck the Islamic Republic on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the meeting, chaired by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, \u201cwill assess all viable diplomatic and political measures we can take to restore freedom of navigation, guarantee the safety of trapped ships and seafarers and to resume the movement of vital commodities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iranian attacks on commercial ships, and the threat of more, have halted nearly all traffic in the waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the rest of the globe\u2019s oceans, shutting a critical path for the world\u2019s flow of oil and sending petroleum prices soaring.<\/p>\n<p>A fifth of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>The US is not among the countries attending Thursday\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump had singled out Britain and France as unhelpful in the month-long war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of those countries that can\u2019t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT,\u201d Trump said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116323481956698353\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Truth Social post<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3787898\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AFP__20210602__9B929N__v1__JPEGStandard__StraitOfHormuz-e1774523908676-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA map of the Gulf locating the Strait of Hormuz and the ports of Jask and Kharg Island in Iran. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No country appears willing to try and open the strait by force while fighting rages, and Iran can target vessels with anti-ship missiles, drones, attack craft and mines. But Starmer said Wednesday that military planners from an unspecified number of countries will meet soon to work on how to ensure security for shipping \u201cafter the fighting has stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s meeting is considered a first step, to be followed by \u201cworking-level meetings\u201d of officials to hammer out details.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer said resuming shipping \u201cwill not be easy,\u201d and will require \u201ca united front of military strength and diplomatic activity\u201d alongside partnership with the maritime industry.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, 35 countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and the United Arab Emirates, have signed a statement demanding Iran stop its attempts to block the strait and pledging to \u201ccontribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage\u201d through the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Cooper urged a \u201cswift resolution\u201d to the Middle East war, accusing Iran of holding the global economy hostage by blocking shipping through the strait, ahead of a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in France attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3775790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/AFP__20260311__A2T34NR__v5__HighRes__WarIranUsIsraelThailandAttackLogistics-e1773474004213-640x400.j.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThis handout photo taken on March 11, 2026, and released by the Royal Thai Navy, shows smoke rising from the Thai bulk carrier \u2018Mayuree Naree\u2019 near the Strait of Hormuz after an attack. (Handout \/ Royal Thai Navy\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian Parliament\u2019s National Security Commission, warned on Wednesday that the US will not regain access to the Strait of Hormuz and that from now on only \u201cthose who comply\u201d with Iran\u2019s terms will be allowed to pass vessels through the key strait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Strait of Hormuz will certainly reopen, but not for you; it will be open for those who comply with the new laws of Iran,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Ebrahimazizi33\/status\/2039108812590756184?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Azizi wrote on X<\/a>, without elaborating on what these new terms are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 47 years of hospitality are over forever,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The international effort idea has echoes of the international \u201ccoalition of the willing\u201d that has been assembled, led by the UK and France, to underpin Ukraine\u2019s security after a future ceasefire in that war. The coalition is, in part, an attempt to demonstrate to the Trump administration that Europe is stepping up to do more for its own security.<\/p>\n<p>The urgency of stronger continental defenses has been reinforced by Trump\u2019s renewed suggestion that the US could pull out of NATO.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain at the UN<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Bahrain\u2019s effort to secure a UN resolution to authorize \u201call necessary means\u201d to protect commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz ran into new obstacles Wednesday, underscoring divisions over how to deal with Iran\u2019s effective closure of the waterway that has resulted in the worst energy-supply disruption ever.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain, which took over the presidency of the 15-member UN Security Council for the month of April, had circulated a fresh version of a draft resolution that dropped a previous explicit reference to binding enforcement, hoping to overcome objections from other nations, particularly Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3784053\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26068355612725-1-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIllustrative: This image released by Bahrain\u2019s Interior Ministry shows firefighters extinguishing flames after an Iranian projectile struck an industrial area in Ma\u2019ameer, Bahrain, Monday, March 9, 2026. (Bahrain Interior Ministry via AP)<\/p>\n<p>But a UN diplomat said China, Russia and France raised issues with the new draft before it would have gone into final form at noon on Wednesday under a so-called silence procedure \u2013 where a resolution is adopted if no member objects.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain\u2019s UN ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei told reporters the resolution still required \u201ca lot of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Major Gulf and Western powers still do not have a concrete plan to reopen the waterway, which has been effectively shut since the conflict began a month ago, sending energy prices soaring.
