{"id":371467,"date":"2026-04-02T16:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/371467\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T16:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T16:38:11","slug":"coalition-of-countries-to-work-on-rescuing-ships-trapped-in-strait-of-hormuz-us-israel-war-on-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/371467\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalition of countries to work on rescuing ships trapped in strait of Hormuz | US-Israel war on Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Plans to clear sea mines and rescue trapped ships in the strait of Hormuz will be discussed at a global military planning meeting next week, after a virtual summit of more than 40 countries convened on Thursday hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/yvette-cooper\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yvette Cooper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ahead of the summit, the British foreign secretary condemned \u201cIranian recklessness\u201d for \u201chitting global economic security\u201d as she led talks aimed at reopening the vital shipping lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The discussions are taking place without the US, which began the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/us-israel-war-on-iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war on Iran<\/a>, with the UK, France, Germany, Australia and some Gulf nations exploring what could be done to restore access to the maritime route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US president, Donald Trump, has suggested countries that rely on the strait should \u201cbuild up some delayed courage\u201d and \u201cjust grab it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, Keir Starmer has said unblocking the lane, which carries 10-25% of the world\u2019s oil and gas supplies, would \u201cnot be easy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Chairing a video call with counterparts, the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/yvette-cooper\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">foreign secretary<\/a> said: \u201cIn today\u2019s meeting, we are focusing on the diplomatic and international planning measures, including collective mobilisation of our full range of diplomatic and economic tools and pressures, reassurance work with industry, insurers and energy markets, and also action to guarantee the safety of trapped ships and seafarers, and effective coordination that we need across the world to enable a safe and sustained opening of the strait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said Iran had carried out more than 25 attacks on vessels in the strait and that \u201cthere are some 20,000 trapped seafarers on some 2,000 trapped ships\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said: \u201cIranian recklessness towards countries who were never involved in this conflict \u2026 is not just hitting mortgage rates and petrol prices and the cost of living here in the UK and in many different countries across the world, it is hitting our global economic security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Highlighting the importance of the strait, Cooper pointed to World Bank predictions that a continued blockage could push 9 million people worldwide into food insecurity \u201calongside the unsustainable increases that we have seen in oil prices and food prices hitting households and businesses in every corner of the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At another meeting next Tuesday, military planners would consider how to \u201cmarshal our collective defensive military capabilities\u201d, Cooper said, including looking at issues such as clearing mines that have possibly been laid by Tehran to sink ships in the sea passage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The meeting will be convened by Britain\u2019s Permanent Joint Headquarters, where all its overseas military operations are planned, based in Northwood, north-west London, but some international leaders are expected to join virtually.<\/p>\n<p>Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, on the campaign trail ahead of May\u2019s local elections.  Photograph: Owen Humphreys\/PA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/kemi-badenoch\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kemi Badenoch<\/a>, the Conservative leader, said on Thursday that Trump must not abandon \u201ca mess that he\u2019s made\u201d in the Middle East by leaving other countries to reopen the strait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking during a visit to north-east England, she said: \u201cIf I was speaking to him, I\u2019d be saying, \u2018if you break it, you own it\u2019. That\u2019s what Colin Powell, a former secretary of state in the US, had said. \u2018If you break it, you own it\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe started this war. We said that if he needed support against Iran \u2026 use our airbases. That\u2019s one of the things that Britain has done.
