{"id":371987,"date":"2026-04-02T23:21:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T23:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/371987\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T23:21:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T23:21:08","slug":"how-does-the-nhs-in-scotland-compare-to-the-rest-of-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/371987\/","title":{"rendered":"How does the NHS in Scotland compare to the rest of the UK?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In Scotland&#8217;s data a single patient could be on multiple waiting lists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, PHS estimates that around one in 10 of Scotland&#8217;s population was on at least one new outpatient, inpatient or day\u2011case waiting list as of 28 February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Long waits are not an issue isolated to Scotland and although direct comparisons cannot be made, data for the other three countries show waits over a year still exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/data.england.nhs.uk\/dashboard\/rtt\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NHS England, external<\/a> figures show 136,000 patients were waiting over a year at the end of January, while in <a href=\"https:\/\/datavis.nisra.gov.uk\/health\/ni-inpatient-day-case-waiting-times-dec-25.html\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Ireland, external<\/a> more than 33,000 patients were waiting longer than a year, as of December 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/nhs-activity-and-performance-summary-january-and-february-2026-html#199501\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wales, external<\/a>, 115,700 pathways were waiting over one year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Another avenue of hospital healthcare is key diagnostic tests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">These include four endoscopy tests (including colonoscopies) and four radiology tests (such as CT and MRI scans).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthscotland.scot\/media\/37485\/2026-02-24-diagnostic-report.pdf\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PHS advises against, external<\/a> comparing the waiting times for these diagnostic tests in Scotland with the other four nations due to inconsistencies in definitions. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In Scotland&#8217;s data a single patient could be on multiple waiting lists.
