{"id":372072,"date":"2026-04-03T00:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T00:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/372072\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T00:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T00:22:14","slug":"stroke-patients-being-failed-every-day-due-to-rehabilitation-gaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/372072\/","title":{"rendered":"Stroke patients \u2018being failed every day\u2019 due to rehabilitation gaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patients\u2019 chances of recovery are \u201climited\u201d due to a lack of physiotherapists and other support staff, according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Neurology (ACPIN).<\/p>\n<p>National guidelines say people who have had a stroke should receive therapy-based rehabilitation for three hours a day, five days a week.<\/p>\n<p>But the CSP and the ACPIN said data suggests that, on average, people receive rehab on only three to four days a week in hospital and one to two days once they leave hospital and are supported at home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/21d93cc7-181f-4e68-bc09-43683a0945cf.jpg\" alt=\"A female physiotherapist standing behind a man sitting in a wheelchair and helping him to lift small dumbells in each of his hands\"  \/>Guidelines say people who have had a stroke should receive therapy-based rehabilitation for three hours a day, five days a week (Alamy\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>A national survey of stroke physiotherapists working in 159 NHS services across the UK found workforce shortages across different aspects of stroke care.<\/p>\n<p>These included community stroke services, acute stroke teams and community rehabilitation support.<\/p>\n<p>Findings from the 2025 Stroke Physiotherapy Workforce Survey suggest there are 26% fewer physiotherapists than national guidance recommends in community stroke services, acute stroke teams are operating with 15% fewer physiotherapists than recommended, and community rehabilitation support workers are 36% below guidance levels.<\/p>\n<p>Ash James, director of practice and development at the CSP, said: \u201cThis data shows that despite record numbers of registered physiotherapists, stroke services in hospitals and the community are unable to deliver the care patients need because they are chronically understaffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething is going seriously wrong in our health system if the NHS is failing to turn workforce growth into the posts required to meet even the minimum standards for stroke rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is deeply concerning that our members are going above and beyond to advocate for their patients and secure the staffing they need, only to have their concerns dismissed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adine Adonis, chairwoman of ACPIN, said: \u201cMore people are surviving strokes in the UK than ever before, but survival must be matched with the chance to recover well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings highlight a stark and urgent gap in the number of physiotherapists and support staff available to provide the specialist rehabilitation that stroke survivors rely on. This is not good enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is failing people every day and limiting their potential for recovery. NO SALES HANDOUT\"  \/>David Stadelman experienced a life-threatening series of events including a stroke, heart failure and major surgery (Tamsin Starr\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>David Stadelman, from Bournemouth, experienced a life-threatening series of events including a stroke, heart failure and major surgery, leaving him unable to sit up, walk or carry out basic daily tasks.<\/p>\n<p>The 73-year-old said: \u201cI couldn\u2019t sit up in bed, brush my teeth or wash myself. I was completely dependent on others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After four months in hospital, David was discharged to a care home where he began four months of intensive physiotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe physiotherapists were absolutely brilliant. They worked with me four times a week and helped me relearn everything, from taking my first steps, to walking up the stairs so I could eventually go home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t just treat me, they gave me hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once home Mr Stadelman turned to a local charity-run rehabilitation group, which he credits with helping him regain independence.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/73b76b9f-18eb-49af-93ba-13f1a639292a.jpg\" alt=\"David Stadelman (right) undergoing rehabilitation with nurse Alahna Cullen\"  \/>Mr Stadelman (right) turned to a local charity-run rehabilitation group (Tamsin Starr\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I hadn\u2019t found that support, I don\u2019t think I\u2019d be doing half of what I can now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m walking miles, I\u2019m driving again, I\u2019m getting back to living my life.
