Reflecting on his work, Tom Ellis has an answer to his iconic line.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The Welsh actor tells MH Strong Talk he always desired to put on more muscle mass. He spoke about it at length in 2019 when taking MH through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a28435487\/tom-ellis-lucifer-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a28435487\/tom-ellis-lucifer-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout routine\" data-node-id=\"3.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">workout routine<\/a> he did to prepare for the role of suave playboy\/fallen angel. Mainly he focused on building muscle and maximizing aesthetics\u2014a necessity with the number of steamy shirtless scenes throughout the series. \u201cLucifer was the first opportunity for me to go for a transformation and put on that 20 pounds that I&#8217;ve always wanted to put on,\u201d says Ellis.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Five years after the show\u2019s finale, his desires have somewhat shifted. While still wanting to maintain muscle, his training has evolved from a Lucifer build to a more athletic physique for his role in CIA. Most importantly, Ellis wants to reach a balance between mass and staying light on his feet (he admits to being \u201cquite a good dancer\u201d).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ellis explains to exercise physiologist and strength coach <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.patdavidson\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.patdavidson\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Dr. Pat Davidson\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Dr. Pat Davidson<\/a> and MH fitness director <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ebenezersamuel23\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ebenezersamuel23\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S.\" data-node-id=\"6.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S.<\/a> that he doesn\u2019t want to get typecast. They talked about the evolution of his training, injury recovery, and more.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ellis wants to play a character that dictates where he takes himself physically. \u201cIf the devil is going to embody a human being, he probably wants to look a certain way,\u201d says Ellis. \u201cFor CIA, the guy is an operative who has to blend into society.\u201d Being noticeably more built than the average person would likely give someone away. Plus, Ellis needed to increase his stamina and move well for fight scenes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Nowadays, Ellis focuses on functional training. Though he has had to scale back to pushups and pull ups after a back injury in 2025 and meniscus tear in his knee. He tries to complete five sets of 20 pushups and occasionally engages in pull up challenges with his CIA co-star Nick Gehlfuss. Ellis also sets time in the gym for Pilates core workouts or with his physical therapist for deep core stability work. The goal is to build his core outwards while also protecting the weakest area in his back.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Along with strength-building exercises, Ellis has also embraced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a70884969\/4-week-walking-workout-plan-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a70884969\/4-week-walking-workout-plan-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"the wonders of walking\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the wonders of walking<\/a>. His walking goal is between 20,000 to 25,000 steps a day. \u201cHaving moved to New York, what I really love about it is that I&#8217;m walking everywhere again,\u201d he says. \u201cConsoling myself about not working out on the weekends, I make sure I get steps in.
