It\u2019s about how well the body is maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here, he shared the five factors he feels make all the difference: <\/p>\n<p>1) Building and maintaining muscle <\/p>\n<p>As we age, our muscles begin to wane \u2013 a process called sarcopenia. If we do nothing to maintain or build it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/70-year-old-fitness-journey_uk_680a158be4b0c44791370dcc\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"some research says\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cd0406e4b0332f12c09593\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"680a158be4b0c44791370dcc\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some research says<\/a> we\u2019re expected to lose half our muscle mass by 80.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest predictors of healthy ageing is muscle mass,\u201d Dr Greenyer said.<\/p>\n<p>2) Prioritising sleep and recovery <\/p>\n<p>\u201cChronic poor sleep can accelerate ageing at a cellular level,\u201d Dr Greenyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt affects hormones, recovery, inflammation and even visible signs like skin quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experts think that following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/7-1-sleep-rule-longevity_uk_69bbc313e4b04fe25a48da31\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"\u201c7-1\u201d sleeping rule\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cd0406e4b0332f12c09593\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"69bbc313e4b04fe25a48da31\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c7-1\u201d sleeping rule<\/a> (getting at least seven hours of sleep a night, with no more than an hour\u2019s variance between bedtimes and wake-up times) could add years to your life.<\/p>\n<p>3) Reducing inflammation through lifestyle choices <\/p>\n<p>In and of itself, inflammation isn\u2019t a problem \u2013 it can help our bodies to heal and may be an important part of muscle growth. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/inflammaging-explained_uk_68b191c4e4b0d635adb50940\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"But \u201cinflammaging\u201d can occur\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cd0406e4b0332f12c09593\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"68b191c4e4b0d635adb50940\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">But \u201cinflammaging\u201d can occur<\/a> when inflammation is chronic, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/inflammaging-explained_uk_68b191c4e4b0d635adb50940\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"might\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cd0406e4b0332f12c09593\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"68b191c4e4b0d635adb50940\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">might<\/a> contribute to conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and frailty.<\/p>\n<p>It \u201cis influenced by diet, stress, alcohol intake and overall lifestyle,\u201d Dr Greenyer said. <\/p>\n<p>Those who eat whole foods, stay active, and manage stress well may have less unwanted inflammation, he added. <\/p>\n<p>4) Maintaining \u201cmetabolic flexibility\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This is <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5513193\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the ability\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69cd0406e4b0332f12c09593\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5513193\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the ability<\/a> to respond well to changing metabolic demands.
