Either way, there could be something special to see in the night sky, with a large tail potentially visible late this week.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/new-sungrazing-comet-could-become-visible-to-the-naked-eye-during-the-day-if-the-sun-doesnt-destroy-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/new-sungrazing-comet-could-become-visible-to-the-naked-eye-during-the-day-if-the-sun-doesnt-destroy-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/comets\/new-sungrazing-comet-could-become-visible-to-the-naked-eye-during-the-day-if-the-sun-doesnt-destroy-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comet C\/2026 A1 (MAPS) was discovered<\/a> Jan. 13 by French astronomers at the AMACS1 Observatory in Chile. Although the comet was initially thought to have a nucleus measuring around 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) wide, astronomers later <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2515-5172\/ae5220\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2515-5172\/ae5220\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reduced the estimate to under 0.25 miles<\/a> (0.4 km) based on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/james-webb-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> observations taken in February.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3a45d3e8-5774-4ee7-ad19-c06db011e605-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">C\/2026 A1 (MAPS) belongs to a special family of comets called Kreutz &#8220;sungrazers,&#8221; so called because they get very close to the sun, lighting up brightly but often breaking into smaller pieces. There are around 3,500 members of the Kreutz family, all of which are thought to be fragments of a single giant comet that got too close to the sun about 1,700 years ago, according to Live Science&#8217;s sister site <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/will-a-bright-comet-adorn-our-early-spring-sky-why-astronomers-are-getting-excited-about-comet-c-2026-a1-maps\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/will-a-bright-comet-adorn-our-early-spring-sky-why-astronomers-are-getting-excited-about-comet-c-2026-a1-maps\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e0d79fd9-29cf-4234-a9a9-d9a60442c98a\">C\/2026 A1 (MAPS) is expected to get within 98,000 miles (158,000 km) of the sun&#8217;s surface and pass through the lower regions of the sun&#8217;s outer atmosphere, or corona, at 9:30 a.m. EDT (13:30 UTC) Saturday (April 4), according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/britastro.org\/section_news_item\/c-2026-a1-maps-a-kreutz-group-sungrazer\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/britastro.org\/section_news_item\/c-2026-a1-maps-a-kreutz-group-sungrazer\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">British Astronomical Association<\/a> (BAA). According to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Sungrazer_comets\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Sungrazer_comets\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Space Agency<\/a>, many Kreutz sungrazers evaporate, but if they survive, they could put on a spectacular show.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0e646c64-6f61-4323-8feb-3368d3b6e969\">Because C\/2026 A1 (MAPS) is traveling into the sun&#8217;s glare, it will be difficult to see before April 4. If it survives its close encounter with the sun \u2014 even if it fragments \u2014 it could become visible for a short time after sunset in the evenings that follow.
