If you’re not sure, it probably means they weren’t built with sustainability as one of its key design tenets.

Hylo Athletics places sustainability at the core of its running shoe development by incorporating renewable and bio-based materials such as castor-bean–derived fibers, sugarcane and algae-based components, and natural rubber in place of many traditional petroleum-based plastics.

The new Hylo Axis stability-oriented daily training shoe reflects the London-based brand’s mission to develop performance running footwear while placing a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility. But it doesn’t come at the expense of comfort and performance. Instead of treating sustainability as an afterthought, the Axis is designed around the belief that runners shouldn’t have to sacrifice those traits to reduce their environmental impact. (The same was true of last year’s Hylo Impact neutral daily trainer.)

The brand also works to reduce environmental impact through cleaner production methods, including the use of water-based adhesives and materials intended to lower the overall carbon footprint of each pair of shoes. In addition, Hylo supports circular design initiatives that recycle worn-out shoes and transform them into new products, helping divert old footwear from landfills.

How does all of that environmental goodwill translate to daily training in the Hylo Axis? Based on the input from four of our wear-testers, pretty good actually, as long as you have realistic expectations about what you’ll get out of the shoe.

What’s New: The Axis is Hylo’s first light-support road running shoe, incorporating notable stability elements such as a broad, supportive platform and an internal heel support structure that helps guide the foot without a reliance on traditional medial posts. The Axis uses a Hyperbolt+ supercritical nitrogen-infused material that blends modern foaming technology with sustainability, while the engineered single-piece Jacquard warp knit is made from 60 percent bio-based, castor bean-derived yarn that creates an secure fit, offers a good amount of breathability and reliable structure. The plush corn-derived lining in the collar and tongue adds to the shoe’s exceptional lockdown and long-haul comfort. The TreadLight outsole is made from 60 percent natural rubber and features an ornately contoured design for optimized traction on wet surfaces.

Hylo Axis Specs

Price: $175
Approximate Weights: 9.2 oz. (women’s 8); 11.0 oz. (men’s 9)
Heel-Toe Offset: 8mm; 38mm (heel), 30mm (forefoot)

(Note: this is a UNISEX-sized shoe. The shoes are sized in men’s sizes, but a corresponding women’s shoe would be 1.5 sizes below a runner’s typical size. For example: for a women’s size 8.0 shoe, order a size 6.5.)

Fit/Feel/Ride: The Hylo Axis fits true to size with a medium volume interior and ample room in the toe box. The step-in feel is welcoming and comfortable—a significantly padding heel collar, a smooth, secure upper, and a cushy gusseted tongue contribute to a secure, locked-down fit through the midfoot. (Runners who have wider feet in the forefoot should be aware that the front of the toe box tapers down quite a bit, which could feel more constricting during long runs, especially on hot days when feet swell.)

The ride sensation straddles the line between semi-soft and semi-firm and offers a modest amount of responsiveness. The bio-based supercritical midsole doesn’t give off a bouncy or pillowy sensation, but more of a consistently smooth, stable, and durable rolling vibe that feels best at slower and moderate paces. The shoe’s universal guidance system provides added stability for both neutral and overpronating runners without feeling controlling or inhibiting. It’s a smooth, comfortable, and compliant shoe, but not inherently energetic.

Why It’s Great: If green, environmentally features, materials, and construction techniques are important to you, this shoe is a great one to consider. The Hylo Axis places a strong emphasis on sustainability, incorporating plant-based and recycled materials throughout its design. The pairing of bio-based Hyperbolt+ foam, a sculpted midsole and internal support system provide smooth heel-to-toe transitions with optimal structural stability. Combined, those features create smooth-riding daily training shoe with a smaller carbon footprint and less material waste.

Why You’ll Love It: This is shoe that looks good and feels good. You’ll love the Hylo Axis for its smooth, stable ride that makes daily miles feel controlled and comfortable. The shoe delivers reliable cushioning and traction, giving runners confidence on a variety of road surfaces. Our wear-testers liked it most for mid-range runs at slow to moderate speeds, including a 8-mile run at 9-minute pace we did as a group in Boulder, Colorado. We differed a bit on its efficacy as a long run shoe; two of us thought it was ideal for long easy miles, while two of us craved a bit more pop and responsiveness from the midsole in the final miles of longer runs.

Why You Might Not Like It: One potential drawback of the Hylo Axis is that it’s 1-2 ounces heavier than many typical daily trainers. That added weight, and the shoe’s semi-soft/semi-firm midsole, can make the shoe feel a bit slower or less nimble, particularly for runners who prefer lighter footwear for uptempo efforts. For our testers who are accustomed to lighter, tempo-friendly daily trainers, the Axis came across as somewhat bulky and less energetic underfoot. The smallest runner in our test group noticed the weight immediately, but the tallest/biggest runner in our crew appreciated the stability and smooth sensation of the shoe and had no qualms about the weight.

Pros: It rained on one of the days we tested the Hylo Axis in Boulder, Colorado, and we found the outsole provided very dependable traction on wet pavement, even in rainy conditions. The uniquely contoured tread pattern seemed to channel water away to optimize grip.
Cons: The biggest challenge with this shoe isn’t the extra weight, but more so that it has a limited range of pace variability. That might not be a big deal if you’re looking for a smooth-riding stable training shoe that you don’t plan on using for exceptionally fast running. That said, this isn’t a shoe that is very conducive for tempo runs, long intervals, or progressively paced long runs.

Conclusion: Hylo Athletics is one of the brands pushing shoe design with components derived from natural materials. The Axis might not have the top-tier performance values of contemporary daily trainers, but it still a solid shoe with plenty of good attributes. A few of us liked it the more we ran in it, which is always a sign that aside from the subjective wear-testing process, it’s a shoe we’d continue taking out for easy midweek training runs.

About the Author
Contributing editor Brian Metzler is the Content Director for UltraSignup.com.
