The rare encounter, recorded off the coast of Spain, has pushed researchers to reexamine more than 160 years of evidence.

The specimen, measuring roughly 210 cm and weighing between 80 and 90 kg, was captured by local fishermen on April 20, 2023. Sightings in this part of the Mediterranean remain uncommon, which makes each verified record particularly valuable for scientists tracking the species.

To understand whether this event was isolated or part of a broader pattern, researchers turned to historical documentation. By compiling records dating back to the 19th century, they aimed to clarify whether great white sharks still maintain a presence in these waters.

A Long History Points To A Hidden Presence

The research team assembled documented sightings and captures dating back to 1862, creating a detailed timeline of the species in the Spanish Mediterranean. According to findings published in Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, the data reveal a consistent, if irregular, pattern.

Rather than disappearing, the species appears to persist at very low detection levels. Scientists refer to this as a “ghost population,” a group that remains present but is seldom observed. Gaps in sightings, sometimes spanning years, have contributed to the belief that the species had vanished locally.

These irregular records reflect both the difficulty of monitoring marine predators and the wide-ranging behavior of Carcharodon carcharias. The Mediterranean does not show signs of a dense population, yet the accumulated evidence confirms continuity over time.

A juvenile great white shark is captured in the Mediterranean. Credit: Báez & al.

This Tiny Clue Has Scientists Talking

The age of the captured shark has drawn particular attention. As a juvenile, it provides a clue that goes beyond simple presence. According to lead researcher Dr. José Carlos Báez, identifying young individuals is critical for understanding the species’ status in the region.

“Determining the presence of juvenile individuals is of particular importance,” says Dr. José Carlos Báez, the study’s lead researcher. “The occurrence of juvenile specimens raises the question whether active reproduction may be occurring in the region.”

The researchers added that this possibility challenges the idea that the region functions only as a transit corridor. If breeding activity is confirmed, even at a limited scale, it would reshape current understanding of how great white sharks use these waters.

Close-up of a juvenile great white shark reveals its distinctive teeth structure. Credit: Báez & al.

Feared Predator or Essential Ocean Guardian?

Public perception of great white sharks often leans heavily on fear, shaped by rare but widely reported incidents. Yet the historical record analyzed in the study suggests that encounters in Spanish Mediterranean waters are exceptional rather than frequent.

“The main idea I want to convey to the public is that these large marine animals have a fundamental role in marine ecosystems. As highly migratory pelagic species, they redistribute energy and nutrients across vast distances,” Báez added“They serve as nature’s scavengers – by consuming carrion, they keep ecosystems clean. Even in death, their descent to the seafloor provides a critical pulse of nourishment for deep-sea communities.”

Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the species faces ongoing global decline. Researchers explain that watching and tracking them over the long term is important to understand their behavior and protect them.

“By shedding light on the biology and ecology of the great white shark, research can help replace unfounded myths with genuine understanding,” he said.

A juvenile great white shark caught in the Mediterranean has reignited a long-running scientific investigation into a population…

[26
85,46,141,386
0":"post-373267","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wildlife","8":"tag-il","9":"tag-israel","10":"tag-science","11":"tag-wildlife
["GET
