From smartphones to DSLRs, could Artemis II become one of the most photographed space flights in history?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-102bf2a7-5764-438e-a110-e0f16e9caa78\">NASA has done something many people do: strapped on a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/tag\/gopro\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/tag\/gopro\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/tag\/gopro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GoPro<\/a> when about to do something really cool.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 years have passed since humans have traveled to the moon for the sake of science \u2013 but beyond the space tech itself, the cameras the astronauts are using aboard Artemis II are wildly different than the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/news\/nikon-leica-and-hasselblad-the-cameras-that-have-been-to-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/news\/nikon-leica-and-hasselblad-the-cameras-that-have-been-to-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/news\/nikon-leica-and-hasselblad-the-cameras-that-have-been-to-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hasselblads that were abandoned on the lunar surface in 1969<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Between the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/buying-guides\/the-best-gopro-cameras\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/buying-guides\/the-best-gopro-cameras\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/buying-guides\/the-best-gopro-cameras\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GoPros<\/a> and smartphones to the DSLRs and mirrorless cameras aboard the first manned mission towards the moon in over 50 years, the list of cameras aboard Artemis II reads nearly like a dossier on modern camera categories. That list includes cameras mounted to the spacecraft\u2019s exterior and interior, as well as handheld cameras that the four astronauts aboard will use. (The unmanned Artemis I used <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/artemis\/orion\/nasas-artemis-i-cameras-to-offer-new-views-of-orion-earth-moon\/#:~:text=There%20are%2024%20cameras%20on,or%20Moon%20in%20the%20background.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/artemis\/orion\/nasas-artemis-i-cameras-to-offer-new-views-of-orion-earth-moon\/#:~:text=There%20are%2024%20cameras%20on,or%20Moon%20in%20the%20background.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">24 cameras.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>NASA astronauts trained with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/tag\/nikon\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/tag\/nikon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.digitalcameraworld.com\/tag\/nikon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon<\/a> D5. That includes modified GoPros strapped to the outside of the Orion on the solar array wings, where they\u2019ll record images of the spacecraft, Earth, and Moon. How\u2019s that for a durability test?<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The best camera deals, reviews, product advice, and unmissable photography news, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4a37fcf8-32e1-402f-a2b3-895927dddc4b-1\">The astronauts will also be using GoPros to record daily life aboard the mission, which will be used for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/artemis-ii-astronauts-tour-orion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/artemis-ii-astronauts-tour-orion\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">a National Geographic project called Return to the Moon<\/a>.
