The pair, just four days old, were lying in a plastic bread crate \u2013 a makeshift cot their mother had created.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For weeks, the family has been sleeping on the floor in a school classroom in Mount <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/lebanon\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lebanon<\/a>, filled with other families displaced by Israel\u2019s attacks on the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen I saw them in that crate, I just started crying,\u201d says Nasereddine, who lives in Sydney, as she recalls the video call with her friend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t look at them. It was too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nasereddine is among members of Australia\u2019s Lebanese diaspora facing a worsening psychological toll as the Israeli military invasion of the country intensifies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Israel\u2019s defence minister, Israel Katz, this week said its army would occupy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/31\/israel-vows-occupy-large-parts-southern-lebanon-expand-buffer-zone\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swathes of south Lebanon<\/a> and destroy homes along the border, prompting concerns of long-term forced displacement. Katz drew a comparison to Gaza, where Israel\u2019s military razed most homes in the territory\u2019s neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than a million people have been displaced by Israel\u2019s invasion of Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities. The death toll has surpassed 1,200, including more than 120 children, the Lebanese health ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">With much of Lebanon\u2019s south populated by the Shia Muslim community, their relatives in Australia have expressed helplessness and grief as they watch on in horror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nasereddine, who first moved to Australia from her home country in 1990, wakes each day and immediately checks the news. She searches through the names listed as part of a growing death toll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last month, three of her friends and their families were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Beirut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEvery single moment of that terrifying ongoing attack on Lebanon is just eating me up,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m not sleeping, well, I\u2019m not eating. I cry easily \u2026 I\u2019m in a constant worry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/mar\/02\/us-israel-war-on-iran-dramatically-expands-across-middle-east\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel launched a military campaign in Lebanon<\/a> shortly after Lebanon-based military group Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel on 2 March in retaliation for the US-Israel\u2019s assassination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/28\/khamenei-likely-killed-us-israel-iran-strikes\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>. Photograph: Raghed Waked\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In January, Nasereddine\u2019s heavily pregnant friend was forced to evacuate from her family\u2019s home in Aitaroun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They later relocated to Mount Lebanon because schools in the capital were overflowing with displaced civilians.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cShe tells me: \u2018I have zero hope that I\u2019m returning to my house,\u2019\u201d Nasereddine says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Her in-laws are living with five other families \u2013 also forced to leave their homes in the south \u2013 in a two-bedroom house in Mount Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mustafa, a Lebanese Australian who requested his surname not be published, has also spent weeks in anguish as he messages his extended family who have evacuated their homes in the country\u2019s south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen videos of my little cousins crying, not understanding what the situation is or why they have to go,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey tend to understand that they\u2019re being bombed. They understand there is a war but they don\u2019t understand why. And that impacts them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mustafa\u2019s cousin, who has two children, recently returned to their village, Aitit, in the country\u2019s south because they were unable to find affordable accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, three of Nasereddine\u2019s friends and their families were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Beirut. Photograph: R\u00e9mi Chauvin\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cShe\u2019s at a point where she said I\u2019d rather all of us go in peace,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to cope with not knowing what will happen \u2026 you feel utterly helpless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have loved ones who could die at any moment and that is nothing easy in your subconscious to live with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Shia Muslim Council of Australia this week wrote to the foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, highlighting the \u201cprofound distress\u201d within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/07\/us-israel-lebanon-strikes-australian-lebanese-relatives-impact-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lebanese Australian community<\/a> and calling for increased humanitarian assistance and pathways for migrants and refugees to remain open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The council also urged the federal government to speak out against Israel\u2019s attacks on Lebanon, including the targeting of civilians, journalists and healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese attacks have been condemned by the UN and in joint statements by Western nations. We should not wait for Lebanon to become the next Gaza before we condemn these actions,\u201d the letter says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This week Wong released a joint statement alongside the UK and several EU nations expressing the government\u2019s support for the government and citizens of Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe express our condolences to the family of the victims and our solidarity to the civilian population impacted by this war both in Lebanon and Israel,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wong \u201cstrongly condemned\u201d Hezbollah\u2019s attacks in support of Iran against Israel and called for all parties to immediately de-escalate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last month, Australia announced an extra $5m in aid to support civilians in Lebanon, particularly women and children affected by the conflict.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It was the first time Mariam Nasereddine had seen her friend\u2019s newborn twins.
