An unlikely sighting of a blue whale off the coast of Argentina recently delighted conservationists.<\/p>\n
In the waters of Argentina’s southern Chubut Province, conservationists captured rare evidence of a blue whale during a photo-identification expedition monitoring humpback and sei whales, according to<\/a> the Buenos Aires Times. It was the first time anyone had ever spotted the species within the Patagonia Azul Provincial Park.<\/p>\n Blue whales have been recorded in other areas of Argentina, but not frequently. The large blue whale caught the team off guard.<\/p>\n “We came across this whale surfacing, but this one was different \u2013 it was gigantic, far larger than any we had ever seen,” said Tom\u00e1s Tamagno, a biologist on board during the sighting, per the BA Times.<\/p>\n “We moved a little closer, carefully, to see what it was and found ourselves face to face with a blue whale,” he explained further.\u00a0 “Fortunately, we were able to get reasonably close and take some good photographs.”<\/p>\n The blue whale<\/a> is the biggest animal on the planet and is classified as endangered.
