It\u2019s been a while since we\u2019ve learned BioWare was officially teaming with Prime Video to make a Mass Effect\u00a0show<\/a>. Now it sounds like it\u2019s on the verge of being greenlit, albeit with some supposed changes that\u2019ve raised some eyebrows.<\/p>\n

Recently, Lesley Goldberg of The Ankler<\/a> published a report digging into Amazon TV head Peter Friedlander, who\u2019s allegedly wanted to read the scripts of all in-development projects before letting them move forward with production. In\u00a0Mass Effect\u2019s\u00a0case, it\u2019s said Friedlander wanted rewrites so it could be \u201cmore appealing to non-gamers.\u201d At first glance, that idea sounds silly given those games were arguably written with a broad audience in mind. It\u2019s a mix of Star Trek\u00a0and\u00a0Star Wars, and it\u2019s never really tried to hide that.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it\u2019s also unclear what \u201cmore appealing to non-gamers\u201d even means here. What was so isolating to Friedlander that he felt rewrites were warranted, what was too obtuse to pick up through context, and if he read multiple scripts, how prevalent was this issue throughout them? These are all things we currently don\u2019t know, and probably won\u2019t for a while. Either way, the Mass Effect\u00a0show is definitely not the only adaptation made to be less into itself. Sometimes it doesn\u2019t matter, and other times\u2026well, love or hate it, streamlining is par for the course<\/a> in adaptations. We all know this.<\/p>\n

All we can do is wait for the show comes to fruition and see how it plays out in execution. And since the show won\u2019t be out for a while if it happens, non-players could mitigate the issue by just playing the four Mass Effect\u00a0games, which are probably on sale on PC and consoles right this second.<\/p>\n
