\n\t\u201cThere was this kind of inherent desire to be rooted in naturalism. At the core of \u2018Harry Potter,\u2019 nature is the root of magic,\u201d said production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, explaining the show\u2019s desire to incorporate magical realism into HBO\u2019s version of the Wizarding World. \u201cIf we could harness those things, that\u2019s what magic is.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tEach animal featured in the upcoming show is based on hours of research and observation of its real-life counterparts in nature.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWe are looking at the culmination of a lot of teamwork,\u201d said Laura Sindall. She showed off prototypes of the show\u2019s owls, which are made of metal and plastic and designed to imitate the movements of real owls. The feather team then individually inserts each feather into a net that is glued to the framework.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s about 36,000 feathers per owl,\u201d said CFX artist Sophie Rechtberger about Hogwarts\u2019 favorite messengers and popular pets. \u201cAnd we made 10 owls for this show.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe show will also feature a new-and-improved version of Scabbers, Ron\u2019s pet rat for a time \u2013 now created with motors inside the body to imitate organic movement.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cAs you push the feet down, it actually compresses, and I can actually move this around,\u201d demonstrated John Nolan, Creature Effects Design Supervisor. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel too robotic and rigid, which I think really helps the performance of a young boy who\u2019s probably never held an animatronic before in his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tIn addition to running around realistically on the floor, a version of a \u201cbiting Scabbers\u201d was also created for the show \u2013 and demonstrated by a team member who showed the rat dangling off her finger.<\/p>\n
\n\tOther creatures include a never-before-seen toad, whose movements \u201chave been taken directly from nature,\u201d including the details for its eyes, tongue, and nostrils.
