The volume of water locked away in this deep reservoir is roughly three times larger than all of the planet\u2019s surface oceans combined, according to research that first appeared in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1126\/science.1253358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The finding directly challenges the long-held theory that Earth\u2019s water arrived via comets. Instead, it supports a different idea: that the oceans gradually seeped out from the planet\u2019s interior over millions of years. The research also suggests this deep reservoir may act as a natural buffer, keeping surface ocean volumes stable over geological time.<\/p>\n<p>A Network of 2,000 Seismometers<\/p>\n<p>The research team, led by geophysicist <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.northwestern.edu\/jacobsen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Steven Jacobsen of Northwestern University<\/a>, used an unusually large array of instruments to locate the water. They placed more than 2,000 seismometers across the United States and analyzed seismic waves generated by more than 500 earthquakes. Jacobsen noted that these waves make the planet \u201cring like a bell for days afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As those waves traveled through <a href=\"https:\/\/indiandefencereview.com\/earths-largest-cave-reveals-a-prehistoric-jungle-with-clouds-rivers-and-creatures-from-another-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"97343\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Earth\u2019s interior<\/a>, their speed changed depending on what type of rock they passed through. When the waves moved through water-bearing rock, they slowed down measurably. He grew ringwoodite samples and exposed them to the massive pressures and temperatures matching those at 700 kilometers depth. The experiments showed that the mineral could indeed store large quantities of water under those conditions. At that depth, the pressures and temperatures are just right to squeeze the water out of the ringwoodite.<\/p>\n<p>Physical Proof From a Diamond<\/p>\n<p>The seismic evidence was not alone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/science\/programs\/create\/diamond-exploration\/our-team\/faculty\/graham-pearson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Graham Pearson<\/a>, a diamond researcher and the Director of the Diamond Exploration and Research Training School at the University of Alberta, provided physical proof from an unexpected source: a diamond.<\/p>\n<p>That diamond originated in the transition zone and was carried to the surface by a volcanic eruption. Inside it, Pearson found a tiny sample of ringwoodite that contained water. It was the first direct physical evidence of hydrous, or water-bearing, ringwoodite from <a href=\"https:\/\/indiandefencereview.com\/worlds-largest-underground-thermal-lake-albania-discovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"108583\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">deep inside Earth<\/a>. Pearson is one of the world\u2019s leading scientists in diamond studies and has pioneered methods of dating minute geological samples.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"920\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/dn25723-1_1200.jpg\" alt=\"massive 'ocean' at Earth's core\"\/>This crystal of blue ringwoodite is being crushed in a lab experiment. Image credit : Steve Jacobsen\/Northwestern University<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince our initial report of hydrous ringwoodite, we\u2019ve found another ringwoodite crystal, also containing water, so the evidence is now very strong,\u201d Pearson said.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobsen described the deep rock almost as if it were sweating. \u201cIt\u2019s rock with water along the boundaries between the grains, almost as if they\u2019re sweating,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn25723-massive-ocean-discovered-towards-earths-core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New Scientist<\/a>, when the findings were first published.<\/p>\n<p>A Natural Buffer for Surface Oceans<\/p>\n<p>The discovery changes how scientists think about where Earth\u2019s water came from. The older comet theory had problems: the chemical signature of comet water does not perfectly match the water in Earth\u2019s oceans. Jacobsen suggested that the reservoir could help explain why ocean volumes have remained relatively stable for millions of years, preventing drastic changes in sea levels. Without that deep storage, he noted, much of that water would be on the surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be grateful for this deep reservoir,\u201d Jacobsen said. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t there, it would be on the surface of the Earth, and mountain tops would be the only land poking out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heat and Tectonic Connections<\/p>\n<p>The reservoir exists in the mantle\u2019s transition zone, which sits between the upper and lower mantle. At that depth, pressures and temperatures are just right to squeeze water out of ringwoodite, allowing it to move slowly through the rock. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-frankfurt.de\/68385432\/Frank_Brenker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Professor Frank Brenker<\/a>, a geoscientist at Goethe University in Frankfurt, \u201cThese mineral transformations greatly hinder the movements of rock in the mantle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The water trapped in ringwoodite likely plays a crucial role in regulating heat and material movement between the mantle and Earth\u2019s surface. That could affect tectonic activity and the stability of the crust over geological time scales.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the evidence for wet ringwoodite comes from measurements taken beneath the United States.
