It’s also the last chapter, not only for Kitty Song-Covey (Anna Cathcart), but for the franchise as a whole.

The world started with Netflix’s film adaptation of Jenny Han’s “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” and after three films and the first two seasons of the “XO, Kitty” spinoff, there was still plenty of unfinished business — especially after last season’s cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers.

After 18 episodes of will they, won’t they, Kitty and Moon Min-ho (Lee Sang-heon) almost kissed. Almost. But just when it looked like she’d missed her chance to XO the boy of her dreams, Kitty suddenly blurted out a question, asking Min-ho if she could join him on the tour he’s managing that summer.

The third season picks up immediately where we left off, and in typical fashion, things don’t go how you’d expect. After an awkward misunderstanding, Kitty travels to Busan with Min-ho and the rest of their friend crew, still unsure of what the future might hold.

After the first two seasons exhausted the majority of iconic locations that Seoul has to offer, it’s refreshing to see “XO, Kitty” turn to Busan. Haeundae Market, Gamcheon Culture Village and, of course, Gwangalli Beach all serve as a backdrop to the show’s usual mix of Korean and American teen drama tropes.

A scene from Netflix drama “XO, Kitty” Season 3/ Captured from Netflix’s YouTube account

Except there’s a new sense of urgency this time around, as the writers do everything possible to bring the story to a close, trying their best to give every character the ending they deserve. As such, it’s not long before we move back to the Korean Independent School of Seoul, where all these bubbly teens can figure out who they’re really into and what will happen once they graduate.

Still, it wouldn’t be “XO, Kitty” if a well-timed spanner wasn’t thrown into the works, especially where Kitty and Min-ho are concerned. This time around, the main instigator of chaos (beyond Kitty herself) is Marius (Sule Thelwell), an old friend who grows possessive of Min-ho, as well as Q (Anthony Keyvan), in ways you might not expect.

The problem isn’t so much the third-wheeling of it all. No, the issue is that Marius is painted with very cartoonish, villainous strokes. An evil laugh and a twirl of his mustache wouldn’t feel out of place — if Marius had a mustache, that is — and it’s far from ideal given that he’s the only Black character of note, aside from Juliana (which has always been a thankless role for Regan Aliyah).

A redemption arc is eventually squeezed in, along with an expanded story for Shin Ho-jo as Kitty’s cousin, Ji-won. Season 3 also includes the long awaited return of Lana Condor as Kitty’s sister, Lara Jean, and that doesn’t even account for half of the cast, some of whom end up sidelined. At least mainstays Yuri Han (Gia Kim) and Dae Kim (Choi Min-yeong) have more to do this time around.

It’s chaos as usual then in that respect, although it’s reassuring to see queer characters still prioritized in the show’s endgame. Between Q, who identifies as gay, Yuri, who identifies as a lesbian, and Jin (Joshua Hyunho Lee), who identifies as hot, there’s plenty of LGBTQ+ representation here beyond our bisexual protagonist. Even the first kiss of the season is between two male characters, and it’s heartening to see them all get happy endings of their own.

That’s almost unheard of, not just in Korean media, but also in the Western teen dramas that “XO, Kitty” equally draws inspiration from. Beyond the show’s bubblegum outlook, young queer viewers can see their own stories reflected in this world, and that matters a great deal. After all, same-sex marriage remains illegal in Korea, and it wasn’t so long ago that high-profile queer drama “Love in the Big City” faced protests in Seoul.

A scene from Netflix drama “XO, Kitty” Season 3/ Captured from Netflix’s YouTube account

All of that makes it easy to forgive some of the show’s sillier plot holes, like how do these kids ever find time to study? How can a teenager manage a K-pop star? And most importantly, were those cherry blossoms blooming in fall?

Those who do go all in and critique the show’s romanticized portrayal of Korea overlook the fact that not every show needs to be realistic. As a blend of two cultures, “XO, Kitty” never pretends to be solely representative of either, instead mixing together tropes from both with buckets of charm and delight.

Because of that, the show has always been rather ambitious when it comes to the sheer volume of themes and characters and storylines it tries to tackle. Unfortunately, this final chapter fares a little poorer than Season 2 did in terms of execution.

The final episodes are also somewhat less poignant, surprisingly, despite bringing us to the end of Kitty’s journey. Upon reflection, that might have something to do with how well Season 2 wrapped things up when it came to Kitty reconnecting with her mother’s past and heritage.

Still, anyone who’s stuck with Kitty since day one will enjoy how her journey ends, even if it does end up being a tad predictable. To all the fans who’ve loved “XO, Kitty” before, just know that you won’t be disappointed, even if saying goodbye feels bittersweet.

David Opie is an entertainment journalist from the United Kingdom who writes across a range of publications including IndieWire, Empire, Radio Times and more.
