Air\u00a0India\u00a0CEO\u00a0Campbell\u00a0Wilson\u00a0has resigned, a\u00a0source\u00a0with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday, as the\u00a0airline grapples with persistent\u00a0losses\u00a0and\u00a0heightened\u00a0regulatory\u00a0scrutiny\u00a0following a\u00a0crash\u00a0last year that killed 260 people.<\/p>\n

The news of his resignation comes just days after its bigger rival IndiGo<\/a>\u00a0named aviation industry veteran\u00a0Willie Walsh\u00a0as its next\u00a0CEO, as the country’s two largest carriers come under pressure to tackle a mounting industry crisis stemming from the\u00a0Middle East conflict\u00a0on top of domestic operational challenges.<\/p>\n

Reuters reported in January that\u00a0Air\u00a0India’s board was\u00a0scouting\u00a0for a new\u00a0CEO\u00a0to replace\u00a0Wilson, a former Singapore\u00a0Airlines<\/a>\u00a0veteran brought in to steer the\u00a0Indian carrier’s turnaround in 2022 after years of decline under government ownership.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0airline, which is contending with\u00a0aircraft delivery delays, has also been reprimanded by regulators for safety lapses, including flying an\u00a0aircraft eight times without an\u00a0airworthiness certificate\u00a0and\u00a0running planes without checking emergency equipment.<\/p>\n

New Zealand-born\u00a0Wilson’s term was due to end in 2027. He is currently serving a six-month notice period\u00a0and\u00a0plans to stay with the company until a successor is found, the\u00a0source\u00a0said, declining to be identified as they were not authorised to speak with media.<\/p>\n

Air\u00a0India\u00a0did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment outside regular business hours.\u00a0Wilson’s resignation was reported by\u00a0Indian publication Mint late on Monday.<\/p>\n

Since taking over the top job in 2022,\u00a0Wilson\u00a0has steered the\u00a0airline through the early\u00a0and\u00a0difficult stages of its turnaround, including overhauling\u00a0Air\u00a0India’s engineering department\u00a0and\u00a0refurbishing planes\u00a0amid\u00a0supply chain disruptions.<\/p>\n

In December,\u00a0Air\u00a0India\u00a0admitted there was a “need for urgent improvements in process discipline, communication,\u00a0and\u00a0compliance culture,” Reuters reported.<\/p>\n

Air\u00a0India\u00a0has a fleet of 191 planes\u00a0and\u00a0has placed orders for more than 500\u00a0aircraft.<\/p>\n

It has lost money since being bought by Tata Group in 2022, with the financial pressure worsening since Pakistan banned\u00a0Indian carriers from its\u00a0airspace last year.\u00a0Air\u00a0India\u00a0and\u00a0its low-cost carrier\u00a0Air\u00a0India\u00a0Express reported a combined loss of 98.08 billion rupees ($1.05 billion) in the 2024-2025 financial year.<\/p>\n

A prolonged Iran war will add further pressure on\u00a0Air\u00a0India’s lucrative western routes, already scaled back due to\u00a0Pakistan’s restrictions.<\/p>\n

Air\u00a0India\u00a0is chaired by N. Chandrasekaran, who is also the chair\u00a0of Tata Group. Singapore Airlines holds a 25% stake in Air India.<\/p>\n
