{"id":378995,"date":"2026-04-07T04:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T04:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/378995\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T04:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T04:48:10","slug":"diesel-remains-volatile-as-prices-rise-again-despite-labors-fuel-tax-relief-petrol-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/378995\/","title":{"rendered":"Diesel remains volatile as prices rise again despite Labor\u2019s fuel tax relief | Petrol prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Diesel users in Australia are not enjoying the same relief as unleaded customers, with one in 30 service stations still entirely out of diesel and prices rising again after an initial slump last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But while the energy minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/chris-bowen\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Bowen<\/a>, urged Australians not to participate in a social media trend where people claim to be filling up their fuel tanks with cooking oil, he said the government was keen to support the development of biofuels like biodiesel from fats and vegetable oils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The minister said 3.4% of Australia\u2019s service stations, as of Monday, had zero diesel. That number included 142 out of 2,400 sites in New South Wales, 51 out of 1,700 in Victoria, and 38 petrol stations in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The number of service stations without at least one type of fuel fell over the week to Monday from more than 800 to fewer than 600, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/01\/australia-fuel-crisis-petrol-prices-graphs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian Australia analysis of state government data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Meanwhile diesel wholesale prices had plummeted by about 20c a litre on Wednesday alone, but surged about 10c higher over the following five days, Australian Institute of Petroleum data shows, as global fuel costs continued to rise.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/suKYn\/2\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Graph of wholesale prices for diesel and petrol<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Petrol prices fell nearly 32c a litre in the capital cities over the week to Monday as retailers applied tax relief from the Albanese government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/01\/australia-fuel-restrictions-rationing-petrol-diesel-prices-excise-cut\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slashing of the fuel excise<\/a>, and state governments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/02\/fuel-crisis-prices-fall-australia-albanese-gst\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreeing to return GST on petrol sales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Unleaded was selling for about 226c a litre on average in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart, according to MotorMouth. Adelaide\u2019s unleaded prices fell 35.4c to an average 224.1c a litre, significantly more than the 32c fuel tax cuts delivered by state and federal governments.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After getting through the busy Easter period of travel with no new disruptions to supply, the government said work was ongoing to secure new shipments of fuel \u2013 including through the prime minister Anthony Albanese\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/apr\/05\/asian-leaders-assure-australia-normal-supply-of-fuel-will-continue-as-albanese-focuses-on-averting-shortages\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">direct engagements with international counterparts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe continue to see no ships cancelled that have been contracted for Australia, extra orders being delivered, and we now have security of supply through April and now into May,\u201d Bowen said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Guardian Australia understands the government is working on securing extra shipments using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/28\/anthony-albanese-chris-bowen-fuel-security-powers-oil-crisis-petrol-diesel-prices\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new powers to underwrite fuel and fertiliser purchases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/w9KpN\/1\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Petrol prices graph<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The benchmark West Texas Intermediate price of crude oil surpassed US$115 before settling above US$111 on Monday, after Donald Trump threatened to destroy Iranian bridges and power plants in a Truth Social post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As his Tuesday evening deadline for Iran to reopen the strait of Hormuz approached, Trump wrote: \u201cOpen the Fuckin\u2019 Strait, you crazy bastards, or you\u2019ll be living in Hell \u2013 JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese government ministers declined to comment on Trump\u2019s latest outburst, but Bowen said Australia wanted to see an end to the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe government will keep working with industry to ensure the security of fuel supply across the board as best we can in these difficult international circumstances. The prime minister\u2019s been, of course, talking to his counterparts. I\u2019ve been talking to mine. Foreign Minister Wong has been talking to hers,\u201d Bowen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been very pleased with the response we\u2019ve had from our south-east Asian partners in particular, who recognise their role as reliable energy suppliers for Australia when it comes to our liquid fuels. And those conversations, of course, particularly between the prime minister and his counterparts, will continue over the course of this week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A number of social media users have recently posted videos online claiming to produce their own form of biodiesel from cooking oil, as an alternative to paying rising diesel prices. Experts have warned against the potentially dangerous tactic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bowen, asked about the trend, also urged caution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWell, I wouldn\u2019t recommend people make their own arrangements for their cars. I think you should only put in what your car manufacturer recommends,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, the minister went on to say the government had invested $1.1bn into the development of biofuels, which can be created from animal fats and vegetable or cooking oils.
