The Strokes<\/a> performed a new song live for the first time last night (Monday April 6) just hours after mailing it to fans on cassette \u2013 check it out below.<\/p>\n

The New York band showcased the track \u2018Going Shopping\u2019 during the second of two warm-up shows in San Francisco at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, ahead of their forthcoming slot<\/a> at Coachella 2026<\/a> later this week.<\/p>\n

Introducing the track, frontman Julian Casablancas<\/a> said to the crowd: \u201cI guess why not right? It\u2019s already out there. A new song.\u201d You can listen to it below.<\/p>\n

It came just hours after 100 random Strokes fans received \u2018Going Shopping\u2019 through the post from the band.<\/p>\n

The track, is a little more laid back than material from their 2020 album, \u2018The New Abnormal<\/a>\u2018 but is no less catchy as Casablancas croons: \u201cI\u2019m goin\u2019 away to the country, don\u2019t wander off too far \/ I\u2019m goin\u2019 out my mind throwin\u2019 all my plans out the window,\u201d over distorted guitars.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere during their show, The Strokes performed their classic hits such as \u2018Last Nite\u2019 \u2018Someday\u2019, \u2018New York City Cops\u2019 and \u2018Reptilia\u2019, alongside tracks from their last album (\u2018Bad Decisions\u2019, \u2018Ode To The Mets\u2019 and \u2018The Adults Are Talking\u2019).<\/p>\n

It came just hours after the band officially announced their new album \u2018Reality Awaits\u2019, due this summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They have been teasing their return over the last few weeks<\/a>, and yesterday they shared an official album teaser on their social media accounts.<\/p>\n

The brief video featured a 1980s Nissan 300ZX alongside the tagline, \u201cIn the flesh, it\u2019s even sexier\u201d. As guitar chords chime, the video revealed: \u201cReality Awaits. The new album by The Strokes. Out this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in 2022,\u00a0Rick Rubin<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 who produced \u2018The New Abnormal\u2019 \u2013\u00a0confirmed that he was working on a new album with The Strokes<\/a>, and had finished a recording session with them in Costa Rica. \u201cIt was incredible,\u201d he recalled at the time. \u201cAnd we did that every day, playing out in the [open], and they\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want to leave. It was, like, the best experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Casablancas revealed that the group had \u201cjammed and started some stuff\u201d<\/a>, but told fans that The Strokes\u2019 next record was \u201cextremely v far off\u201d from being finished. \u201cCheck back in a year or [two] honestly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Guitarist\u00a0Albert Hammond Jr later recalled the \u201cmagical\u201d new sessions<\/a> with Rubin, and looked ahead to the band\u2019s future. \u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ve written our best songs yet,\u201d he said. \u201cI really feel that in my gut.\u201d<\/p>\n

During an interview with\u00a0NME\u00a0in spring 2023<\/a>, Hammond Jr also gave an update on the progress of The Strokes\u2019 next full-length effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [Rubin] was just so excited about where we recorded,\u201d the musician told us of the producer\u2019s revelation from the previous year. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know what to say about it \u2013 I don\u2019t have any information on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not like it\u2019s happening and I\u2019m hiding something. We went and did a bunch of recording. It could come out a year or two years from now \u2013 it\u2019s an unknown amount of time when it\u2019ll be finished but, yes, we are working on another record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0NME\u00a0in 2020<\/a>, the NYC indie icons suggested that they could \u201cbe a little quicker\u201d to release their next album, following the seven-year gap between\u00a0\u2018Comedown Machine\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and \u2018The New Abnormal\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have a good thing going,\u201d Casablancas told us. \u201cWe have a good relationship with Rick. In theory, knock on wood, we should be working faster.\u201d<\/p>\n
