Hector also has a new sensory room.

Three- and 4-year-olds, Rhett and Reagan, had a blast in the new immersive reality room at Fargo Hector International Airport on Monday, April 6.
It’s the perfect distraction.

“Sometimes it’s hard to keep toddlers busy when, when you’re sitting at the airport waiting around, they don’t really like to do that. So having something like this is really neat,” said Derek Bristlin of West Fargo, flying out of Hector for a family vacation.

Bristlin and his family were waiting for their flight to Orlando, so the children were entertained by the nearly 800 options of virtual reality experiences, from water slides and roller coasters to underwater exploration.
“Never seen anything like that. A pretty neat experience,” Bristlin said.

“We were introduced to it through Be More Colorful. It’s a company that’s on the NDSU campus that partnered with Immersive Reality from the United Kingdom. So they brought that technology here,” said Shawn Dobberstein, executive director of Hector International Airport.

Dobberstein said the technology sets the airport apart from others in the region. He said the other new addition, a sensory room, is near and dear to him.

“I have a special needs grandson, and that was pretty close to my heart to see a room where he can go and be calm and kind of enjoy the space, you know, before he would go on to a flight,” Dobberstein said.

The sensory room features another one-of-a-kind technology — a bubble wall, which creates a calming visual stimulation to help travelers get away from the hustle and bustle of the airport.

Dobberstein said the two rooms cost roughly $200,000. The immersive reality room is maintained by an annual subscription and includes daily updates and quality checks.

There’s still construction happening at Hector, including a skyway connecting the new parking ramp to the terminal, which Dobberstein said should be completed later this year. Renovations to the old terminal should be done in early 2027.

People using the new sensory and immersive room at Hector Airport in Fargo on Monday, April 6, 2026.

Kjersti Maday / WDAY

Kjersti Maday joined WDAY as a reporter in May of 2024.
