Kanye West<\/a> is banned from the United Kingdom, the country\u2019s Home Office has announced. After weeks of heated debate about the rapper\u2019s booking at Wireless Festival, the UK government told the BBC<\/a> that Ye\u2019s Electronic Travel Authorisation application had been refused, on the grounds that his presence would not be conducive to the public good. Wireless subsequently announced<\/a> the cancellation of the 2026 festival, saying ticket holders would be refunded.<\/p>\n

The decision follows uproar over Wireless\u2019 decision to book Ye despite his litany of antisemitic remarks and alignment with Nazism in recent years. Politicians, celebrities, and bodies representing British Jewish people have condemned the festival, citing offences such as Ye\u2019s release of a song called \u201cHeil Hitler\u201d\u2014which led to his ban<\/a> from Australia last year\u2014and his sale of a swastika T-shirt. The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, called the booking \u201cdeeply concerning,\u201d\u00a0and several brands pulled out<\/a> from sponsoring the festival.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Melvin Benn, the boss of Wireless parent Festival Republic, released a statement<\/a> standing by the booking and advocating for forgiveness of Ye. Earlier today, West followed up on Benn\u2019s comments with his own statement, released via Festival Republic, which adhered to the format and tone of his January apology in The Wall Street Journal, titled \u201cTo Those I\u2019ve Hurt<\/a>.\u201d In the new statement, Ye wrote that he intended to \u201cpresent a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music\u201d in London, adding that he would like to \u201cmeet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starmer said<\/a> on Tuesday that West \u201cshould never have been invited to headline Wireless\u201d and that the government would \u201calways take the action necessary to protect the public and uphold our values.\u201d<\/p>\n
