They wander the Great Bear Rainforest, a 250-mile tract of western Canada larger than Sri Lanka, feasting on salmon from the chilly North Pacific and living out of the public eye.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yg00053b6qpkhwdl60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The spirit bear and its neighbors, a collection of First Nations communities including the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais, Gitga\u2019at, Heiltsuk, Metlakatla, Nuxalk and <a href=\"https:\/\/coastfunds.ca\/first-nations\/wuikinuxv-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wuikinuxv<\/a>, are culturally and practically entwined. There\u2019s evidence of human habitation of the Great Bear Rainforest stretching back <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/natural-resource-stewardship\/great-bear-rainforest\/gbr-partners-communities#Great%20Bear%20Rainforest%20communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">11,000 years<\/a>. The white bear features in First Nations\u2019 totem poles, oral tales and dances. They rely on the same land and food sources for survival.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yg00063b6qq4abhn53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s this mysterious being that lives amongst them,\u201d said photographer Jack Plant, and yet, \u201cthe majority (of the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais) have not seen one.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yg00073b6qzhdkqviy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plant has spent the last decade living spring to fall with the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais in Klemtu, a small community on Swindle Island, one of dozens along the coastal fjords. Unlike many of the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais, the Briton has seen more than his share of spirit bears, having ventured deep into the temperate rainforest as a guide and photographer. Images from his adventures have been compiled into new book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.figure1publishing.com\/book\/spirit-of-the-great-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spirit of the Great Bear<\/a>,\u201d containing 90 photographs from the forest.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pg-72-73-cnn-20260402160657709.jpg\" alt=\"A spirit bear hunts for salmon at a riverbank.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5707\" width=\"8560\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yg00083b6qsvnnkpw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The portfolio shows spirit bears poking out of verdant forest, sopping wet in rivers and feasting on salmon, maws reddened by blood. They appear solitary, regal, conspicuous \u2014 yet at home. Also in the forest are grizzly bears and wolves, and in the ocean, orcas and humpback whales. A book was \u201cnever the goal,\u201d admitted Plant, who said he selected five-10 photos from each year he spent in the forest. \u201cA lot of photographers get that once-in-a-lifetime trip \u2026 I had the luxury of experimenting,\u201d he said. \u201cSo there was really no pressure from anyone but myself.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh00093b6qyxzjclpx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plant first visited the Great Bear Rainforest in 2014 in his early 20s, inspired by a National Geographic cover featuring a spirit bear. \u201cI became obsessed, it\u2019s all I could talk about for years,\u201d he said. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/article\/basic-instincts-spirit-bear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2010 image<\/a> was taken by legendary Canadian photographer Paul Nicklen, who would later become Plant\u2019s mentor, and in a full circle moment, provides the foreword to his book.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000a3b6q9rx2pybk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On that initial trip, Plant saw his first spirit bear on his birthday, \u201can insane moment,\u201d but it was not his only takeaway: \u201cI didn\u2019t realize I\u2019d connect with the people there so much. Everything just fell into place. I was like, \u2018I need to figure out a way I can be here a lot.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000b3b6qxxemjw48@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He turned to guiding, and fell under the wing of Douglas Neasloss, the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais Nation\u2019s current director of stewardship, and the late hereditary chief Haay-maas Ernest V. (Charlie) Mason. Plant said Mason \u201chad to wear glasses an inch thick, but he would spot a spirit bear before anyone else.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000c3b6ql26otel6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese people are different. Their knowledge is not backed by science and research, it\u2019s backed by generational knowledge and wisdom. That I just don\u2019t think you can beat,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/230512141434-indigenous-sustainability-rainforest-card.jpg\" alt=\"indigenous sustainability rainforest card\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Protecting the land of the spirit bear\n                <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/230512141434-indigenous-sustainability-rainforest-card.jpg&amp;q=w_860,c_fill\" alt=\"indigenous sustainability rainforest card\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Protecting the land of the spirit bear<\/p>\n<p>4:07         <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000d3b6qdulknqdy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During his stays, Plant witnessed a remarkable set of conservation wins, pushed by the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais. \u201cFor such a tiny community, they pack a hell of a punch,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000e3b6q1ve8zjd6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2000, the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais outlined a management plan to protect natural resources, and in 2012 were part of a group of First Nations that implemented a ban on trophy hunting of bears in the rainforest. It was so successful, they convinced the government of British Columbia to introduce a province-wide ban on the hunting of grizzly bears in 2017, and the government backed it up by banning the hunting of black bears in the province in 2022. The same year, the Kitasoo Xai\u2019xais also introduced a marine protected area in Kitasoo Bay to preserve herring stocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000f3b6qff80rgpo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plant described the hunting ban as a \u201cwin for the side that said bears are worth more alive than they are dead: tourism is a bigger industry than hunting, so let\u2019s keep them alive.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pg-82-83-cnn-20260402161925556.jpg\" alt=\"The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the world.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3371\" width=\"5850\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000g3b6q3mlsqmvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spirit bears are the product of a recessive gene from both black bear parents, and despite common misconception, are not albino.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000h3b6qnzarvbnr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a really hard animal to study,\u201d said Plant, due to its scarcity and the large area it occupies. There is a lack of good data confirming how many spirit bears exist, with <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/2688-8319.12014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimates ranging from 100-500<\/a>. The Spirit Bear Research Foundation estimates no more than 100 live in the Great Bear Rainforest, though Plant believes there\u2019s \u201cway less,\u201d and maybe 50 at most.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000i3b6qpzihpd47@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite improvements to its protection, the photographer said spirit bears are becoming harder to spot. \u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to say whether they\u2019re moving into areas that are harder for us to get to, or if their population is depleting,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000j3b6qv6lote4w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If a grizzly bear moves into an area, black bears typically move elsewhere, the photographer gives as one possibility. But if the spirit bear population is shrinking \u2014 as Plant feels it is \u2014 there could be multiple reasons.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000k3b6qu3clwsc8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of the challenges spirit bears face, food is the largest. \u201cThere are rivers I\u2019ve seen have abundance of salmon in, and today have barely any,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000l3b6qmxr5cz5u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In one of his book\u2019s most arresting photographs, a spirit bear and a black bear fight over a dead salmon during a 2018 drought that prevented fish from migrating upstream \u2014 a rare event in the rain-sodden part of the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/page-26-27-for-cnn-20260402161110765.jpg\" alt=\"A black bear and spirit bear fight over salmon. For all the battles the First Nations of the rainforest have won, \u201cwe\u2019re still losing the conservation war,\u201d said Plant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000n3b6q5yqduo2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \ufeffThis August, Douglass Neasloss will receive a hereditary chief name at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/potlatch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">potlatch<\/a> \u2014 a gift-giving ceremony \u2014 in honor of the late Kitasoo Xai\u2019Xais hereditary chief Mason, who died last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000o3b6qvzmw107f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Neasloss, a former chief councilor for the Nation, disagreed with the perception spirit bear numbers are declining, saying \u201cthe population has always been pretty low.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000p3b6q1975kdhk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He is also part of the Coastal Guardian Watchmen, comprising members from seven First Nations who patrol coastal waters around the fjords. They deter illegal fishing and poaching, but also conduct wildlife surveys, monitor fisheries, provide scientific research support and act as environmental emergency response. The group was established in 2005 and today rangers have British Columbia Parks authority, though they are not Parks employees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000q3b6qcztnfktl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn the \u201990s before Watchman, we had a lot of illegal activities. Today we have none,\u201d Neasloss said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pg-208-for-cnn.jpg\" alt=\"The late Kitasoo Xai'xais hereditary chief Haay-maas Ernest V. (\u201cCharlie\u201d) Mason, an influential figure in the life of photographer Jack Plant.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"6040\" width=\"4832\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000r3b6qdniwkc0i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Protecting the coast, the forest and its spirit bears is also protecting the Kitasoo Xai\u2019Xais\u2019 future. The Nation has invested heavily in ecotourism infrastructure, including guide training and the Spirit Bear Lodge, where visiting guests stay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000s3b6qhz3epeha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plant does not see the book as closing a chapter on his life. He\u2019ll return to Klemtu this summer for Mason\u2019s potlatch, and though he\u2019s no longer guiding much, he\u2019ll reenter the wild in search of spirit bears and hopefully a few familiar faces.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000t3b6q42rp4mhi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a particular spirit bear that I watched grow up from an eight-month-old cub to an eight-year-old dominant male,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnheg3yh000u3b6q3pxyj2mn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou\u2019re returning to the forest and waiting for that bear to show up. Your fingers are crossed that he\u2019s okay and he survived the winter.
