Wiseman and Christina Koch, a NASA astronaut on Artemis II, can be seen wiping tears from their eyes. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-375488\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe lost a loved one, her name was Carroll, the spouse of Reid, the mother of Katey and Ellie&#8230;  a bright spot on the moon, and we would like to call it Carroll,\u201d Hansen said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-743827\" class=\"body-graf\">Wiseman was close to moving to Virginia, leaving behind his career as an astronaut, to be near his wife&#8217;s family after she was diagnosed with cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/us\/news-today\/article\/nasa-artermis-ii-mission-astronauts-b9r2c7t92?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqeBL6CV_5bmPc2RGgI_WjFZc_5NE48g6txcVLiLZb1Nh_i9R5KoKzvtmQ5EmmM%3D&amp;gaa_ts=697ced21&amp;gaa_sig=Ke3XC2Vj0xR2UExUpv-oeR16caSzmT0U83xrr0QL9i5eJeq-MhI6EJhSJVrX6Rid5fD9beL4o3Xpt2VHwzxD2w%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Sunday Times reported<\/a>. But she insisted he stay home in Houston to pursue his dream. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bc9de3\" class=\"body-graf\">A few years later, in 2023, Wiseman was named commander of the Artemis II mission.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1414c2\" class=\"body-graf\">But his kids are what keep him moving forward. \u201cDespite a long list of professional accolades, Reid considers his time as an only parent his greatest challenge and the most rewarding phase of his life,\u201d Wiseman\u2019s NASA biography reads.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e64dec\" class=\"body-graf\">Several months before liftoff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/space\/artemis-ii-astronauts-names-who-are-nasa-moon-mission-rcna265105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wiseman told NBC\u2019s \u201cTODAY\u201d show<\/a> that the mission was weighing on him. Deciding to leave his children and go on the life-changing mission was a difficult choice.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b28b72\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019m a single father of two daughters,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019d be a lot easier just to sit on my couch and watch football for the weekend, but at the same time, there\u2019s four humans that were put in a position to be able to go explore and do something that is very unique and rare in this civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-22e5f6\" class=\"body-graf\">According to NASA, the crew named another crater after the Orion capsule they are currently flying in, calling it \u201cIntegrity,\u201d honoring both their spacecraft and the historic mission.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dad3de\" class=\"body-graf\">When the mission is complete, the crater name proposals will be formally submitted to the International Astronomical Union, which dictates the naming of \u201ccelestial bodies\u201d and their \u201csurface features.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d83891\" class=\"body-graf\">The four astronauts officially completed the mission\u2019s lunar observation period on Monday, breaking the record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth: approximately 252,752 miles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-51b013\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAs we surpass the furthest distance humans have ever traveled from planet Earth, we do so in honoring the extraordinary efforts and feats of our predecessors in human space exploration,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/space\/live-blog\/artemis-ii-moon-astronauts-live-updates-rcna266588\/rcrd106892?canonicalCard=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hansen radioed to Mission Control<\/a> when the milestone was confirmed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-db091c\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe will continue our journey even further into space before Mother Earth succeeds in pulling us back to everything that we hold dear,\u201d he said. \u201cBut most importantly, we choose this moment to challenge this generation \u2014 and the next \u2014 to make sure this record is not long-lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3b863e\" class=\"body-graf\">The Artemis II crew flew farther from Earth than the Apollo 13 crew in 1970, which reached roughly 248,600 miles away, according to NASA. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1bf403\" class=\"body-graf\">Wiseman, Koch, Glover and Hansen already began their journey home after the lunar flyby.
