\n According to RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu, the rollout began on April 7, 2026, as announced during the 2026 Monetary Policy Statement.\n <\/p>\n

\n “The RBZ and banking institutions have put in place all the necessary logistics and operational modalities for the seamless rollout of the upgraded BiG5 ZiG banknotes.\n <\/p>\n

\n Accordingly, the family of new BiG5 ZiG bank note series has since been distributed throughout the whole country in sufficient quantities to meet anticipated cash demand, consistent with the stipulated daily and weekly cash withdrawal limits,” he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The new notes, which are being phased in, will initially comprise ZWG10 and ZWG20 denominations, as well as a new ZWG50 note, as seen in AllAfrica<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n “Members of the public are further reminded that the old ZWG banknotes series will continue to co- circulate with the new BiG5 ZiG banknotes indefinitely.\n <\/p>\n

\n The old ZWG notes will naturally and automatically be phased out of circulation once they are deposited into the banking system,” said Mushayavanhu.\n <\/p>\n

\n Higher denominations, such as ZWG100 and ZWG200, are planned to follow, depending on market demand.\n <\/p>\n

The new ZiG design<\/p>\n

\n The redesigned currency<\/a>, known as the “Big Five” series, incorporates famous wildlife pictures to strengthen national identity.\n <\/p>\n

\n This redesign is in reaction to considerable criticism of the initial ZiG notes, which were launched in 2024 and were said to fade swiftly and wear out readily.\n <\/p>\n

\n Businesses and consumers expressed concerns about the currency’s durability, pushing the central bank to upgrade both its quality and security measures.\n <\/p>\n

\n While the new notes are now in circulation, the existing ZiG notes will remain legal currency and will be gradually phased out.\n <\/p>\n

\n Commercial banks are expected to return old notes to the RBZ for destruction and replacement at the same value.\n <\/p>\n

\n Authorities have also established a statewide awareness campaign to teach the public how to detect the new features.\n <\/p>\n

\n The introduction of higher denominations represents a shift in policy direction. Previously, the RBZ avoided larger notes due to fears about inflation.\n <\/p>\n

\n However, with inflation decreasing sharply to 4.1% in January, its lowest in 2 decades<\/a>, and 3.8% in February 2026, and reserves climbing to $1.2 billion by the end of 2025, the central bank feels more confident in expanding the currency structure.\n <\/p>\n

\n Despite these developments, difficulties persist, as the U.S. dollar continues to dominate everyday transactions in Zimbabwe, especially in the informal sector, where trust in local currency is poor.\n <\/p>\n

\n Historical instability, such as previous instances of hyperinflation and currency devaluation, continues to influence public attitude.\n <\/p>\n
