Gold (GC=F<\/a>) June futures opened at $4,835 per troy ounce on Wednesday, 3.2% higher than Tuesday\u2019s closing price of $4,684.70. This was gold\u2019s largest overnight gain since late-November.<\/p>\n

Silver May (SI=F<\/a>) futures opened at $73.45 per ounce on Wednesday, 2% higher than Tuesday\u2019s closing price of $71.99. At the time of publication, the price of silver was around $77, marking a 7% increase from Tuesday\u2019s closing price.<\/p>\n

Precious metal prices surged after President Trump announced a two-week ceasefire deal with Iran. The announcement was made just hours before Trump\u2019s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face aggressive infrastructure attacks. According to the president\u2019s social media post, the ceasefire agreement requires Iran to allow traffic through the waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. After the ceasefire announcement, Brent crude oil (BZ=F<\/a>) fell as low as $90.01 a barrel, its lowest point since March 11.<\/p>\n

The ceasefire and corresponding drop in oil prices eases concerns of an extended conflict that sparks inflation and higher interest rates. While gold is traditionally considered an inflation hedge, the yellow metal can lose value when interest rates rise to combat rising prices.<\/p>\n
