Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Wishah has been killed in an Israeli drone strike in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n
Wishah, a correspondent in Gaza for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was killed on Wednesday after the attack hit a car he was travelling in on al-Rashid Street, the coastal road that runs west of Gaza City.<\/p>\n
The air strike caused the car to burst into flames, sources told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n
Israel has been targeting journalists in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of its genocidal war against Palestinians in Gaza in October 2023.<\/p>\n
The Gaza Government Media Office says at least 262 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since then.<\/p>\n
Al Jazeera\u2019s Ibrahim al-Khalili, reporting from Gaza City, says the fact that Wishah was killed while travelling on the main road in Gaza City shows \u201cthe situation is getting much more dire in light of the ongoing Israeli military\u2019s \u2018ceasefire\u2019 violations\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nearly six months since the US-brokered \u2018ceasefire\u2019 came into effect, and the Israeli violations continue \u2013 targeting journalists like Wishah, who has been covering the genocidal war since day one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Gaza Government Media Office says the Israeli military has committed about 2,000 violations since the \u201cceasefire\u201d took effect.<\/p>\n
\u2018Systematic targeting\u2019<\/p>\n
The office also said the killing of Wishah was an example of the \u201csystematic targeting and assassination of Palestinian journalists\u201d by Israel.<\/p>\n
It called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists Union and media bodies worldwide to \u201ccondemn these systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists and media workers in the Gaza Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n
The office appealed to the international community and relevant organisations to \u201cstop these repeated attacks,\u201d prosecute those responsible in international courts, and \u201cexercise serious and effective pressure to stop the crime of genocide\u201d and protect journalists in Gaza.<\/p>\n
More than 72,000 people have been killed and over 171,000 others injured in the Strip since October 2023. The assault was halted under a US-backed ceasefire that took effect last October.<\/p>\n
According to Gaza\u2019s Health Ministry, at least 733 Palestinians have been killed and 2,034 injured in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Israeli drone strike kills Mohammed Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, west of Gaza City.
