\n\tFor the better part of two decades, Donna Karan<\/a> has been living quietly in the Hamptons \u2014 spotted only occasionally here and there, in Sag Harbor at Le\u202fBilboquet or at Vera Wang\u2019s Manhattan townhouse to celebrate Gene Pressman\u2019s Barneys book \u2014 mostly keeping to herself since selling her namesake brand in 2001.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThis summer, she\u2019s back.<\/p>\n

\n\tKaran, who pretty much ruled Seventh Avenue in the 1990s, is exec producing\u00a0Mister Halston<\/a>, a new play about her old pal Halston, the swashbuckling Studio 54 habitu\u00e9 whose spectacular rise and even more spectacular fall is getting the stage treatment for the first time. \u201cI saw a workshop staging of\u00a0Mister Halston\u00a0last summer at Bay Street Theater and liked it so much, I wanted to get involved,\u201d Karan, 77, tells Rambling. The world premiere runs June 2-21 at Sag Harbor\u2019s Bay Street Theater, which is, of course, practically in Karan\u2019s backyard.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two go way back. They met at the 1973 Battle of Versailles \u2014 the legendary showdown between French couture royalty (Saint Laurent, Cardin, Givenchy, Dior, Ungaro) and their American upstarts (Blass, de la Renta, Burrows and Anne Klein, where Karan was then working as an assistant). No winner was declared, but Halston, who died in 1990 of AIDS, brought the house down by arranging a showstopping turn by Liza\u202fMinnelli.<\/p>\n

\n\tWritten by Raffaele Pacitti and directed by Michael Wilson,\u00a0Mister Halston\u00a0is set in the decadent decades of \u201970s and \u201980s New York. Says Karan, \u201cHe paved the way for what was to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
