Democratic party leaders have vowed to renew the effort to curb Donald Trump\u2019s war in Iran<\/a> after several days of escalating tactics that culminated in a temporary ceasefire on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

In recent months, several war powers resolutions have failed in Congress after a handful of Democrats<\/a> voted alongside Republicans. But Trump\u2019s aggressive overtures this week \u2013 including a Truth Social post that said \u201ca whole civilization\u201d could be wiped out if Iran did not agree to demands, have pushed some to act.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need a permanent end to Donald Trump\u2019s reckless war of choice,\u201d said Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, on CNN shortly after Trump<\/a> announced the two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday. \u201cHouse Democrats have demanded that Speaker Mike Johnson immediately reconvene the House back into session so we can move a war powers resolution that will end this conflict permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the congressional recess, lower-chamber Democrats will ask unanimous consent to pass a war powers resolution during Thursday\u2019s pro forma session, according to a source familiar with the discussions.<\/p>\n

Representative Glenn Ivey, of Maryland, will lead the effort, and will invite all members who are in Washington on Thursday to join. However, the motion is unlikely to succeed, since a single objection would block unanimous consent and require Democrats to pursue a formal vote on the resolution.<\/p>\n

In a press conference in New York on Wednesday, Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, said Democrats in the upper chamber would force a vote when Congress returns next week. \u201cThis war has made us worse off today than before it started,\u201d he said, noting the cost of the war and the effect on gas prices. \u201cThis is one of the very worst military and foreign policy actions that the United States has ever taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, more than 70 Democrats are calling for the 25th amendment to be invoked to remove Trump from office after his Truth Social post on Tuesday and an expletive-filled post on Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n

The outburst raised questions about the president\u2019s mental health, and also spurred grave concerns about whether he would follow through on his threats to bomb Iran\u2019s critical infrastructure \u2013 which would amount to war crimes under international law.<\/p>\n

Some lawmakers have called for his cabinet to invoke the amendment to declare him unfit for office, others have called for his impeachment and conviction \u2013 and some have called for both.<\/p>\n

Senator Chris Murphy, of Connecticut, told CNN <\/a>on Tuesday: \u201cNo president in control of his senses would publicly promise to eradicate an entire civilization.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump seems to be taking us on a path to mass war crimes. That\u2019s a path we cannot accept.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ro Khanna, a representative of California, wrote<\/a> on Tuesday on X: \u201cWe need to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump. Threatening war crimes is a blatant violation of our constitution and the Geneva Conventions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pramila Jayapal, a Democratic representative from Washington state, said that while she was \u201crelieved Trump did not destroy an entire civilization last night\u201d his \u201cunhinged threat and illegal war make it clear he is unfit to serve as president\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s threat outraged even those who formerly made up his core Maga base, including former representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, and rightwing commentators and conspiracy theorists Alex Jones<\/a> and Candace Owens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201c25TH AMENDMENT!!!\u201d Greene, a staunch Trump ally turned critic, posted<\/a> on X. \u201cNot a single bomb has dropped on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness.\u201d<\/p>\n
