{"id":382685,"date":"2026-04-09T06:01:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T06:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/382685\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T06:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T06:01:13","slug":"south-east-asian-markets-account-for-8-8-of-global-capital-inflows-from-2021-to-2024-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/382685\/","title":{"rendered":"South-east Asian markets account for 8.8% of global capital inflows from 2021 to 2024: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FDI makes up 72.5% of inflows to Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[SINGAPORE] Six growth markets in South-east Asia made up 8.8 per cent of total capital inflows to developing economies from 2021 to 2024, the Milken Institute has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">This is up from the 7.6 per cent recorded from 2017 to 2020, it said in its Global Opportunity Index 2026: Growth Markets in Southeast Asia report released this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The institute said that the six markets \u2013 Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam \u2013 are \u201cwell positioned to capitalise on emerging opportunities\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThese countries benefit from strong economic fundamentals, growing financial sectors, and dynamic innovation economies,\u201d it added in the Apr 7 report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Foreign direct investment (FDI) accounted for 72.5 per cent of the capital inflows into the six markets from 2021 to 2024, marking a 15.1 percentage point increase from the previous four years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Portfolio inflows, meanwhile, \u201cdeclined sharply\u201d to 8.5 per cent, while bank-related and other inflows fell to 19.1 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Navigate Asia in<br \/>a new global order<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-lct text-lg font-normal leading-snug -tracking-2%\">Get the insights delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Mergers and acquisitions \u201cremained relatively stable\u201d from 2017 to 2024 in terms of deal counts, discounting a \u201cbrief period following the onset of Covid-19\u201d. Indonesia and Malaysia accounted for the largest share of such activity, both in terms of volume and value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The Milken Institute said that despite \u201cglobal trade frictions, softening domestic demand and shifting patterns of capital flows\u201d, South-east Asia has shown that it can sustain economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia, Indonesia take the lead<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Malaysia ranked 23rd globally on the institute\u2019s global opportunity index, placing it the highest among the six South-east Asian markets. But the &quot;corporate mafia&quot; claims have now  cast the spotlight on governance credibility.\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The Milken Institute said that Malaysia\u2019s investment landscape is \u201crelatively balanced, anchored by strong institutions and robust economic fundamentals\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">It further noted that Malaysia came in 17th globally for financial services and 18th for business perception, also placing it first among the six markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Indonesia stood out for \u201cnotable improvements\u201d in its financial sector. It ranked 38th globally in financial services, rising from 78th in 2022. The Milken Institute also noted that Indonesia is among the world\u2019s top 20 economies by gross domestic product, coming in 17th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The Philippines, meanwhile, \u201ccombines strong growth prospects with more uneven investment conditions\u201d, the Milken Institute said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cWith projected real GDP growth of 5.7 per cent in 2026, the country ranks sixth in economic performance and 32nd in economic fundamentals,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cHowever, its weaker scores in business perception and institutional framework \u2013 56th and 59th, respectively \u2013 highlight governance and regulatory challenges that may constrain longer-term investment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Among the six markets, Cambodia and Laos lagged their regional counterparts, the Milken Institute found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cStructural and institutional constraints continue to weigh on their investment environments, with both countries struggling with institutional frameworks&#8230; and aspects of their economic fundamentals related to long-term growth prospects,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Laos ranked 79th globally in institutional frameworks; Cambodia came in 73rd. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The institute noted that in Cambodia, capital inflows had been growing \u201csteadily until 2021, driven mainly by a strong expansion in bank-related and other inflows, and a modest gain in FDI\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cSince then, bank-realted and other inflows have declined sharply, turning negative in 2024,\u201d it said, adding that FDI \u201cremained relatively stable, while portfolio inflows were negligible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Laos had the biggest share of FDI inflows \u201cfrom 2017 to 2018, and again in 2023 and 2024\u201d. However, bank-related and other inflows turned negative from 2021 to 2023, after accounting for the largest share of total capital in 2019 and 2020. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The country\u2019s portfolio inflows stayed \u201cminimal\u201d throughout, the institute said.<\/p>\n<p>Dip in China FDI <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The Milken Institute pointed out that growth markets in South-east Asia \u201crepresent a subset of developing economies, which captured less than 20 per cent of the world\u2019s capital investment from 2021 to 2024\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Still, it noted that inflows to China \u201ccontracted sharply\u201d, falling 64.1 per cent or US$295.2 billion between the two four-year periods. <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The country\u2019s share of capital inflows \u201cdeclined by nearly 20 percentage points\u201d to 14.7 per cent of the developing economies\u2019 aggregate in 2021 to 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cFDI had the smallest decline, down US$5.9 billion, compared with declines of US$14.1 billion in portfolio and US$9.7 billion in bank-related and other inflows,\u201d the Milken Institute noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Such declines in capital inflows to China had a relatively significant effect in reshaping the global distribution of capital flows, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-lucida text-xl font-medium italic leading-normal -tracking-5% text-gray-850\">Decoding Asia newsletter: your guide to navigating Asia in a new global order.
