{"id":383189,"date":"2026-04-09T12:55:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T12:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/383189\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T12:55:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T12:55:11","slug":"kengo-kuma-creates-earth-tree-installation-in-copenhagen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/383189\/","title":{"rendered":"Kengo Kuma creates Earth \/ Tree installation in Copenhagen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/kengo-kuma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kengo Kuma and Associates<\/a> has collaborated with Danish manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/dinesen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dinesen<\/a> on the wood-and-brick Earth \/ Tree installation at art centre Copenhagen Contemporary.<\/p>\n<p>The installation, which was led by <a href=\"https:\/\/kkaa.co.jp\/en\/about\/kengo-kuma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kengo Kuma and Associates<\/a>\u00a0partner Yuki Ikeguchi, is centred around a suspended structure made from wood slats.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2311663 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kengo-kuma-dinese-earth-tree-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Hall with wooden floor and ceiling\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Wood from the ceiling meets floor bricks in Earth \/ Tree<\/p>\n<p>It has a lighting design by local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/ankerco.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anker &amp; Co<\/a> and draws on the Japanese concept of komorebi, which refers to the patterns of shadow and light that are created when sunlight passes through treetops.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an installation to create an architectural &#8216;komorebi&#8217;, sensorial moments under the soft wood veil above the brick mount,&#8221; Ikeguchi told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2311652 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kengo-kuma-dinese-earth-tree-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Bricks on wooden floor\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Kengo Kuma and Associates worked with Dinesen on the installation<\/p>\n<p>The studio used wood from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinesen.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dinesen<\/a> and brick from Danish manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.petersen-tegl.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pedersen Tegl<\/a> to create Earth \/ Tree, which sees the wooden ceiling installation meet thrown-together brick tiles that were intended to represent the earth.<\/p>\n<p>According to the architect, there were two reasons behind Kengo Kuma and Associates&#8217; decision to work with these materials for the installation, which is displayed in an old industrial hall.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/16\/banyan-tree-higashiyama-kyoto-hotel-kengo-kuma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/b-banyan-tree-higashiyama-kyoto-kengo-kuma_dezeen_2364_col_1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Noh stage of Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto by Kengo Kuma\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Kengo Kuma embellishes Kyoto hotel with timber-skeleton theatre stage\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One is to express the most fundamental form of architecture, a place under the tree canopy, feeling the earth under your feet where one finds comfort, unity and inspiration,&#8221; Ikeguchi said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The other is to celebrate the finest Danish traditional material crafts, timber and brick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2311660 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kengo-kuma-dinese-earth-tree-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Wooden ceiling by Kengo Kuma\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Earth \/ Tree is on display in an old industrial hall at Copenhagen Contemporary<\/p>\n<p>The wood for the exhibition was processed in collaboration with the Danish Troldk\u00e6r School as part of an initiative to empower students with special needs.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors can also explore their own creativity in a workshop section of the installation.<\/p>\n<p>This has a sand pit that they can use to create landscapes as well as a variety of building blocks, including Tsumiki, a building block designed by Kengo Kuma, Danish-produced wooden building blocks and miniature bricks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2311654 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kengo-kuma-dinese-earth-tree-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Workspace with sand pit at Copenhagen Contemporary\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Visitors can create their own designs in a sand pit<\/p>\n<p>Earth \/ Tree is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/copenhagencontemporary.org\/en\/copenhagencontemporary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Copenhagen Contemporary<\/a>&#8216;s CCreative programming and was designed especially for the space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have done installations and exhibitions in various forms, scales, and designs in Europe that are specific to each space and context,&#8221; Ikeguchi said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For CC it is unique because of the director&#8217;s vision, the raw beauty of the industrial space and the amazing collaborators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2311662 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kengo-kuma-dinese-earth-tree-copenhagen_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Bricks and wood\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Japanese and Danish materials were combined for the exhibition<\/p>\n<p>The installation was intended to showcase the connection between Japanese and Nordic approaches to craft and materiality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Collaboration with artists is at the heart of Dinesen,&#8221; said Dinesen brand director Hans Peter Dinesen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through our wood, they bring visions to life, infusing our work with unique stories, identity, and an expanded mythology.
