Artificial intelligence lab Anthropic is exploring the possibility of designing its own chips, three sources said, as the company and its rivals respond to a shortage of AI chips needed to power and develop more advanced AI systems.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence lab\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0is exploring the possibility of designing\u00a0its\u00a0own\u00a0chips, three\u00a0sources\u00a0said,\u00a0as the company and\u00a0its\u00a0rivals respond\u00a0to a shortage of\u00a0AI\u00a0chips\u00a0needed\u00a0to power and develop more advanced\u00a0AI\u00a0systems.<\/p>\n
The plans are in early stages and the company may still decide to only buy\u00a0AI\u00a0chips\u00a0and not design any, according to two people with knowledge of the matter and one person briefed on\u00a0Anthropic’s plans. The company has yet to commit to a specific design or put together a dedicated team to work on the project, one of the\u00a0sources\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the San Francisco-based company declined to comment on the article.<\/p>\n
Demand for\u00a0its\u00a0AI\u00a0model Claude has accelerated in 2026, with \u200bthe startup’s run-rate revenue now surpassing $30 billion, \u200bup \u2060from about $9 billion at the end of 2025,\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0said\u00a0earlier this week.<\/p>\n
Anthropic\u00a0uses a range of\u00a0chips, including tensor processing units\u00a0(TPUs) designed by Alphabet’s<\/a>\u00a0Google and Amazon’s<\/a>\u00a0chips\u00a0to develop and run\u00a0its\u00a0AI\u00a0software and chatbot Claude.<\/p>\n Earlier this week,\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0signed a long-term deal with Google and Broadcom<\/a> which helps design the TPUs. That deal builds on the company’s commitment to invest $50 billion in strengthening U.S. computing infrastructure.<\/p>\n Anthropic’s discussions mirror similar efforts underway at large tech companies that are seeking to design their\u00a0own\u00a0AI\u00a0chips, including Meta<\/a>\u00a0and OpenAI.<\/p>\n Designing an advanced\u00a0AI\u00a0chip can cost roughly half a billion dollars, according to industry\u00a0sources, as companies need to employ skilled engineers and spend to make sure the manufacturing process has no defects.<\/p>\n
