\n\tParamount Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to \u201cBy Any Means,\u201d a civil rights era-set crime thriller from director Elegance Bratton<\/a>, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II<\/a> and Mark Wahlberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe studio has dated the film for theatrical release on Sept. 4. <\/p>\n

\n\tSet against the backdrop of 1966 Mississippi and inspired by true events, the film\u2019s logline explains, \u201cBy Any Means\u201d follows \u201ca volatile partnership between a hardened mafia hitman and a young Black FBI agent as they are forced into an uneasy alliance to track down those responsible for the killing of civil rights leaders \u2014 uncovering a conspiracy that tests the limits of justice, loyalty, and survival.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNicole Beharie, David Strathairn, Giancarlo Esposito, Josh Lucas and Ethan Embry round out the top-tier cast.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a story about unlikely alliances forged under impossible circumstances \u2014 where justice is not clean, and the truth comes at a cost,\u201d said Bratton. \u201cI wanted to explore what it means to confront violence not just as an act, but as a system \u2014 and what it demands of those caught inside it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBratton directs from a screenplay by Sascha Penn. He and Chester Algernal Gordon produced the project under their Freedom Principle banner, alongside Alex Lebovici for Hammerstone Studios; Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road; and Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson for Municipal.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe high-profile project follows Bratton\u2019s narrative feature directorial debut, \u201cThe Inspection,\u201d which premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, where it garnered rave reviews. The film, starring Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union, was based on Bratton\u2019s own experiences <\/a>as a young gay man in the Marines during the \u201cDon\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell\u201d era and a fractured relationship with his mother. Bratton also directed the acclaimed documentaries 2019\u2019s \u201cPier Kids,\u201d winner of the Truer than Fiction award from Film Independent, and last year\u2019s \u201cMove Ya Body: The Birth of House.\u201d<\/p>\n
