The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has ordered an investigation after a beheaded dugong was found in Phangnga on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Minister Suchart Chomklin has issued an order after the carcass of a headless male dugong, fully grown, approximately 2.20 metres long (excluding the head) and weighing approximately 120 kilogrammes was found.<\/p>\n
It was covered in barnacles, with a cut on the right side of its chest from a sharp object. Its tail was tied with a rope knot to an underwater rock near Koh Yao Noi, Phangnga province,<\/p>\n
Mr Suchart said the investigation is urgent and that the culprits must be found. “This is not just about counting the carcasses, but about preserving lives.”<\/p>\n
According to Pinsak Suraswadi, director-general of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, the department has collected evidence and transported the dugong carcass from Koh Yao Noi to Ao Po Pier in Phuket, to be handed over to officials at the Upper Andaman Sea Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center for autopsy to determine the cause of death.<\/p>\n
A police report has also been filed, and the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, enforcing the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act BE 2562 (2019), which stipulates a maximum penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment or a fine of 1.5 million baht.<\/p>\n
Between the years 2023 and 2025, 112 dugongs were stranded. Eight had their tusks\/heads illegally removed.
