{"id":386758,"date":"2026-04-11T13:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T13:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/386758\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T13:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T13:34:07","slug":"met-police-make-arrests-at-london-palestine-action-protest-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/386758\/","title":{"rendered":"Met police make arrests at London Palestine Action protest | Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Arrests have begun at the first mass demonstration opposing the proscription of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/palestine-action\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Palestine Action<\/a> since the group\u2019s ban was ruled unlawful by the high court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Protesters in London\u2019s Trafalgar Square unveiled signs reading: \u201cI oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.\u201d Hundreds of demonstrators sat on camping chairs and on the ground as they held up their placards on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the top of the square, near the National Gallery, large banners were displayed reading: \u201cJurors deserve to hear the whole truth\u201d and \u201cIsrael starves kids\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Several individuals, including a man and a woman with grey hair, were seen being carried off by officers away from the demonstration. One elderly woman using two walking sticks was escorted by an officer away from the protest in central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/london\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shabana Mahmood was given permission to appeal against the high court\u2019s decision. Initially, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/metropolitan-police\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metropolitan police<\/a> said it would immediately stop arresting people for such offences under the Terrorism Act but would gather evidence for potential future prosecutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But after the home secretary was given permission to appeal against the decision the force said it had \u201crevised\u201d its enforcement approach, describing the statement made immediately after the high court\u2019s decision as an \u201cinterim position\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In February, the high court said the government\u2019s proscription of the direct action group was \u201cdisproportionate and unlawful\u201d and that most of their activities had not reached the level, scale and persistence to be defined as terrorism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mahmood\u2019s appeal to the high court is due to be heard on 28 and 29 April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Before the demonstration, Met commander Claire Smart, said: \u201cThose attending should be aware that showing support for a proscribed organisation is an offence under the Terrorism Act, and we will not hesitate to act where the law is broken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt previous events linked to this group we have seen coordinated attempts to disrupt police activity, including obstructing officers and, at times, verbal or physical abuse. Our officers are trained to deal with these situations proportionately and effectively, and we are confident we have the plans and resources in place to respond appropriately, including making arrests where necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response, Defend Our Juries, which organises the demonstrations, said on X: \u201cMore Met lies.
