Lucy Liu<\/a> is reflecting on a frightening moment from her past\u2014one that ultimately shaped how she approaches her health today.<\/p>\n

In an interview with PEOPLE<\/a> on Saturday, April 11, the 57-year-old actress shared that she was once misdiagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s after discovering a lump.<\/p>\n

Liu Opens Up About Getting the Original Diagnosis <\/p>\n

At the time, she said, she didn\u2019t initially panic\u2014but the situation quickly became serious.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really think too much about it,\u201d Liu admitted. \u201cBut it was scary, because at that time, there was less information that was available, because we didn\u2019t have internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Liu, her doctor examined the lump and immediately told her it was cancer\u2014without conducting additional testing. She explained that she moved forward without undergoing standard screenings.<\/p>\n

Her doctor \u201csort of felt the lump and said it was cancer,\u201d Liu said, adding that she went ahead without \u201cgetting screened\u201d or doing any follow-up tests, including \u201can ultrasound or a mammogram.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, she made a swift decision to act.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Liu revealed that she \u201cimmediately scheduled\u201d surgery to have the lump removed.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until afterward that she learned the growth was not cancerous.<\/p>\n

Liu Said She Learned to Star Advocating for Herself<\/p>\n

Looking back, the experience marked a turning point. \u201cI think that was the beginning of understanding how to advocate for myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

At the time, however, she admitted she didn\u2019t question the diagnosis\u2014even when encouraged to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though my friend had said to get a second opinion, I sort of thought, \u2018Well, what\u2019s the point? The doctor knows what they\u2019re talking about,\u2019\u201d Liu explained.<\/p>\n

Now, decades later, the \u201cKill Bill\u201d<\/a> actress is using her story to encourage others to take a more active role in their healthcare decisions.<\/p>\n

She emphasized the importance of screenings, education, and asking questions\u2014especially when facing serious diagnoses.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about the fixing, it\u2019s about really understanding what screening is, and about information and advocacy. That\u2019s a really important thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Liu also acknowledged that, even with modern technology and access to information, many people still avoid routine screenings.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd even though there is so much available to us technologically, a lot of people don\u2019t do it because they don\u2019t want to know if something\u2019s wrong or they\u2019re too busy,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

But she stressed the stakes are too high to ignore. \u201c[But] as busy as you are, it\u2019s a lifesaving thing, because, oftentimes, it\u2019s caught too late, and at that point, you\u2019re basically scrambling to figure out what your resources are.\u201d<\/p>\n
