The astronauts traveled deeper into space than any human had ventured before. The Artemis II mission was a test flight, serving as an experiment to lay the groundwork for future missions. But the moment of reuniting with their loved ones has been among the most anticipated steps of the crew\u2019s journey.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnur9s6b0000356qz4ainsh5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cVictor, Christina and Jeremy, we are, we are bonded forever, and no one down here is ever going to know what the four of us just went through,\u201d Wiseman said. \u201cAnd it was the most special thing that will ever happen in my life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnutdnfo0004356qjkbba5lb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wiseman acknowledged that no one will truly know what the crew\u2019s families went through.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuteabj0008356q634fnv24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis was not easy being 200,000-plus miles away from home,\u201d Wiseman said. \u201cLike, before you launch it feels like it\u2019s the greatest dream on Earth, and when you\u2019re out there, you just want to get back to your families and your friends. Artemis II truly taught her the meaning of what it is to be part of a crew, Koch said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnutzk26000j356qd02sqth7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA crew is a group that is in it all the time, no matter what, that is stroking together every minute with the same purpose, that is willing to sacrifice silently for each other, that gives grace, that holds accountable,\u201d Koch said. \u201cA crew has the same cares and the same needs, and a crew is inescapably beautifully, dutifully linked.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/art002e013367-large-20260411211032693.jpg\" alt=\"(Clockwise from left) Artemis II's Christina Koch, Jeremy Hansen, Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover share a group hug inside the Orion capsule on April 7.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuu11qg000o356qheazf4d6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She said one of her strongest revelations came while observing Earth appear tiny through the window of Orion, and all of the blackness around it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuu0ads000m356q2k3qagot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI know I haven\u2019t learned everything that this journey has yet to teach me,\u201d Koch said. \u201cBut there\u2019s one new thing I know, and that is planet Earth: You are a crew.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Shared humanity and family ties<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuu2fq5000r356q4r1vh0lb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hansen also noted that the human experience has been an extraordinary one for him and his crewmates \u2014 and seemed thrilled to learn it was the same way for everyone on Earth who followed the mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuu3cjc000t356qzjx3cr43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have a term in our crew that we coined a long time ago, the \u2018joy train,\u2019\u201d Hansen said. \u201cAnd it sounds like you saw a lot of joy up there. There was a lot of joy. We\u2019re not always on the joy train, this crew, there are many times we\u2019re not on the joy train, but we are committed to getting back on the joy train as soon as we can. I would suggest to you that when you look up here, you\u2019re not looking at us. We are a mirror reflecting you, and if you like what you see, then just look a little deeper. This is you.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnukxkk000073b6qiqtr7uis@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the trip, the astronauts were able to speak with their spouses and children via brief, remote calls. Wiseman, the mission commander, said the experience of listening to his crewmates\u2019 conversations while crammed together aboard the 16.5-foot-wide (5-meter-wide) Orion spacecraft was a remarkable bonding experience.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnukzq07000b3b6qhjz44fmp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHearing your crewmates giggling and crying and just gasping and listening and loving their families from afar,\u201d Wiseman said, has been the \u201cneatest\u201d bonding experience.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnul4w6l000w3b6q1066tpex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFamily is so important to all four of us, and that has been amazing,\u201d Wiseman said during an April 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kkyUSFYrsKM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dispatch from Orion<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnul69zt000y3b6qmhxlceqr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wiseman said he was moved to tears and could hardly speak when he first connected with his daughters from space. He is a widower, and during the mission, the crew proposed naming a lunar crater for his late wife, Carroll.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuujvau0014356q66z4ealw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wiseman\u2019s final words Saturday were for the NASA astronauts that had gathered in the auditorium.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuukl3d0016356q4q20tgx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is time to go and be ready,\u201d Wiseman said, speaking of future space exploration. \u201cBecause it takes courage. It takes determination. And you all are freaking going, and we are going to be standing there supporting you every single step of the way in every possible way possible.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuul4810018356qw9hbzjrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Isaacman said that the Artemis II mission will always be remembered because it\u2019s the moment when the crew, and people around the world, saw the moon again and \u201cwhere childhood dreams became missions.\u201d And it paves the way for future missions like Artemis III, expected to launch in 2027. The administrator noted that assembly of the Artemis III vehicle, and the announcement of that mission\u2019s crew, will occur soon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuuobuq001a356qu9ad4mx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe next crew will begin preparing to play their part as we return to the lunar surface, we build the base and we never give up the moon again,\u201d Isaacman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuup6ri001c356q52uovwlm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center, said the \u201cmoon joy\u201d spread by the crew will empower and inspire a new generation to believe that their dreams are possible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnuupf1r001e356qrywkgle4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt will lead countless students to become the next scientists, engineers, inventors, mathematicians and astronauts who will dare to forge new frontiers in space, and push the boundaries of what\u2019s possible for the benefit of all,\u201d Wyche said. \u201cWe often say that we stand on the shoulders of giants, and after seeing them return from this mission, I have to say their shoulders now seem even broader for the next generation to stand on.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmnult48i00003b6qsupk03sd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/wonder-theory?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter<\/a>.
