{"id":389701,"date":"2026-04-13T11:24:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T11:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/389701\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T11:24:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T11:24:11","slug":"arab-pressure-reins-in-hezbollah-protests-ahead-of-israel-lebanon-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/389701\/","title":{"rendered":"Arab pressure reins in Hezbollah protests ahead of Israel-Lebanon talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Supporters of the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group poured out into the streets of Lebanon over the weekend in demonstrations against the first in-person negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on Tuesday in Washington, Israeli and Lebanese media reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>However, pressure from Arab states, especially from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, was placed on Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who heads the Hezbollah-allied Amal Movement, to quell the demonstrations, the Lebanese newspaper Nidaa al Watan reported.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure placed on Berri was meant to prevent anything that could promote civil unrest or destabilize the Lebanese government, the report said, and street protests constituted a red line.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper also reported that the demonstrations failed to reach the level the organizers had intended to pressure Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam against moving forward with the negotiations, which are set to begin on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah and Amal issued a joint statement Saturday evening, calling on their supporters to refrain from continuing the demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Lebanon\u2019s cabinet instructed security forces to restrict weapons in Beirut exclusively to state institutions, a move that fell short of full demilitarization of the capital.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/01\/AFP__20250109__36TC836__v3__HighRes__LebanonPoliticsVotePresident-e1736533816756.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3457047\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AFP__20250109__36TC836__v3__HighRes__LebanonPoliticsVotePresident-e1736533816756-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tLebanon\u2019s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri chairs a parliamentary session to elect a president, in Beirut, January 9, 2025. (Anwar Amro \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe army and security forces are requested to immediately begin reinforcing the full imposition of state authority over Beirut Governorate and to monopolize weapons in the hands of legitimate authorities alone,\u201d Salam said at the end of a cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said in a statement that \u201cthe only solution to the situation Lebanon is facing is a ceasefire with Israel that would lead to direct negotiations between the two countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting held earlier Thursday with representatives of Lebanon\u2019s Maronite community, Aoun said the Lebanese proposal for a ceasefire and negotiations was beginning to receive positive responses in international circles, adding that Lebanon continued to hold international talks on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Lebanese Ambassador to Washington Nada Hamadeh-Moawad, Israeli Ambassador to Washington Yechiel Leiter, and US Ambassador to Beirut Michel Issa \u2013 respectively leading the Lebanese, Israeli, and US delegations in Washington \u2013 will be in attendance at Tuesday\u2019s planned talks, a US official familiar with the details told The Times of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26100533051404.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3799369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26100533051404-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tA Hezbollah supporter waves a flag with the portrait of the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during a protest against the Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, in front the government palace in Beirut, Lebanon, April 10, 2026.
