Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Europe has \u201cmuch to learn\u201d from Israel, accusing the continent of suffering from \u201cdeep moral weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking during Israel\u2019s official Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony, Netanyahu said Europe had forgotten the distinction between \u201cgood and evil.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEurope today is afflicted by deep moral weakness,\u201d he said. \u201cIt has much to learn from us, especially the essential lesson of the clear moral distinction between good and evil.\u201d<\/p>\n
Netanyahu said moments such as the current one require \u201cgoing to war for the sake of what\u2019s good, for the sake of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also claimed Europe is losing its ability to defend \u201cits identity and values\u201d and that Israel is defending Europe and \u201ccivilization against barbarism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Netanyahu\u2019s remarks came amid growing criticism in Europe over Israel\u2019s policies in the occupied West Bank and Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed \u201cdeep concern\u201d over developments in the Palestinian territories and warned against what he described as a \u201cde facto partial annexation\u201d of the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n
Merz also urged Netanyahu during a phone call to begin direct peace talks with Lebanon and called for an end to hostilities in southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Netanyahu\u2019s already faces mounting legal pressure. His corruption trial, which began in 2020, remains ongoing. Netanyahu denies the charges and has described them as a \u201cpolitical campaign aimed at toppling\u201d him.<\/p>\n
