\n\tGuillermo del Toro<\/a> doesn\u2019t just direct monsters \u2014 he understands them.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Oscar-winning auteur behind \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d (2017) and \u201cPan\u2019s Labyrinth\u201d (2006) has built a career elevating genre cinema through stories of misunderstood outsiders. But with his long-awaited adaptation of \u201cFrankenstein<\/a>,\u201d the Mexican filmmaker has returned to what he calls his creative origin \u2014 and maybe his most personal film yet.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo me, the point of origin was \u2018Frankenstein,\u2019\u201d del Toro tells Variety. \u201cThis is not a monster movie. This is a story about what it means to be human.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDel Toro\u2019s take on Mary Shelley\u2019s 1818 novel isn\u2019t horror in the conventional sense \u2014 it\u2019s myth, metaphor and opera. After decades in development, \u201cFrankenstein\u201d finally premiered at the Venice Film Festival to rapt curiosity, followed by two sold-out surprise screenings at Telluride. Now it arrives in Toronto, where its sprawling visual language and emotional core will be on full display for North American audiences.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film stars Oscar Isaac as Dr. Viktor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Christoph Waltz in a mysterious supporting role and Mia Goth in a performance shrouded in secrecy. Together, they anchor what del Toro calls a \u201cgothic rock concert about loneliness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s intimate and grand at the same time,\u201d he says. \u201cIt needed to feel like grief and love and rage could all exist together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the heart of \u201cFrankenstein\u201d is Elordi\u2019s transformative performance as the Creature \u2014 almost unrecognizable beneath the film\u2019s elaborate prosthetics.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOne thing I love about this creature, especially when he\u2019s first born, is that he\u2019s like a child,\u201d del Toro says. \u201cHe\u2019s discovering the world moment to moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDel Toro describes Elordi\u2019s movement as having \u201cballetic grace,\u201d a physicality that echoes the director\u2019s belief in monsters as beings of beauty as much as terror.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut while Elordi\u2019s quiet presence drives the emotional arc, it\u2019s Isaac\u2019s Viktor Frankenstein that adds the film\u2019s volatile pulse.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn terms of range \u2014 what [Isaac] gets to do and play in his career \u2014 he gets to go up, down, grand, intimate,\u201d del Toro says. \u201cHe brings this fury, this guilt, this madness. It gives the film its heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDel Toro has been trying to make \u201cFrankenstein\u201d for most of his career. Why now?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been following the creature since I was a kid,\u201d he says. \u201cI waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions \u2014 both creatively, and in terms of achieving the scope to make it different. To make it at a scale where you could reconstruct the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat world is unmistakably del Toro\u2019s: richly textured, lovingly detailed and even emotionally devastating. The film\u2019s craft \u2014 from production design and makeup to Alexandre Desplat\u2019s elegiac score \u2014 is already drawing awards buzz.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis movie doesn\u2019t pull its punches,\u201d del Toro says. \u201cThere\u2019s a brutality to it. But there\u2019s also grace. And maybe that\u2019s the point \u2014 that both can exist in the same body.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, reception has been mixed \u2014 an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes and split reactions out of Venice and Telluride mirror what happened with del Toro\u2019s \u201cNightmare Alley\u201d (2021). That film, while seen as a box office underperformer, still earned four Oscar nominations, including best picture. \u201cFrankenstein\u201d could follow a similar path.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix is already positioning it as one of its major awards contenders this year, alongside Noah Baumbach\u2019s \u201cJay Kelly\u201d and Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s \u201cA House of Dynamite.\u201d With its rich aesthetic and lived-in performances, \u201cFrankenstein\u201d has the potential to make a strong showing in various artisan races.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe never lets the \u201cdivisive\u201d nature of his movies get him down, the same way he doesn\u2019t let it cripple him when one of his many ideas doesn\u2019t get greenlit by a studio.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve written 30 scripts and made 13 movies,\u201d del Toro says. \u201cWhen a movie doesn\u2019t move forward, I tell my team, \u2018It was good practice.\u2019 And in the end, if all I got to make was 13 movies, that\u2019s 13 more than many others get to make in their lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDel Toro\u2019s artistic generosity is matched by his deep loyalty to the filmmaking community.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf [young filmmakers] need three days from me to watch their movie and give feedback, I\u2019ll give it to them,\u201d he says. \u201cEvery Sunday, me and many of my colleagues get together and paint. No industry talk. Just paint. I make quesadillas, and that community is vital to the survival of our business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat generosity \u2014 along with his cinematic vision \u2014 has made him one of the most beloved figures in Hollywood; something a pushy publicist can\u2019t buy you in this town.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFrankenstein\u201d is the story of a being created, then discarded. Of rage born from abandonment. But it\u2019s also about wonder, about the possibility of love in a world that refuses to give it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople think monsters are scary,\u201d del Toro says. \u201cBut they\u2019re just trying to survive in a world that doesn\u2019t love them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLike the Amphibian Man in \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d or the ghost children in \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Backbone,\u201d the Creature is both terrifying and tender, a figure of tragedy wrapped in spectacle.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd perhaps, like its maker, this monster might finally find the love it deserves.<\/p>\n
