However, the human genome consists of over 3 billion base pairs\u2014an enormous needle-in-a-haystack problem.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The researchers worked with Evo 2\u2014an open-source \u201cgenomic foundation model\u201d trained by the Arc Institute\u2014to predict which DNA mutations cause disease, and to understand which biological features might be responsible. Evo 2 is trained to predict the next \u201cletter\u201d in a DNA sequence\u2014in the same way that large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are trained to predict the next word in a passage of text. For ChatGPT, training on most of the text on the internet teaches it the structure of language and facts about the world.
