\n\tTom Cruise<\/a> is back to saving the world \u2014 but this time with a comedic twist \u2014 in Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<\/a>\u2018s Digger<\/a>, as a special look arrived at CinemaCon<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tWarner Bros<\/a>. showed off the project<\/a> during the studio\u2019s Las Vegas presentation on Tuesday, with Cruise and I\u00f1\u00e1rritu both in attendance and receiving a massive round of applause upon their arrival.<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise, likely the industry\u2019s No. 1 advocate for theaters, told the room of cinema owners and distributors \u201cI want to thank you all for everything you do\u201d and celebrated by adding, \u201cwe\u2019re up 23 percent so far\u201d at the box office. \u201cMy film family, you know I\u2019m here for you and I love you,\u201d Cruise said.<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u00f1\u00e1rritu explained that he first had the idea of Digger nine years ago, and has been talking to Cruise about it for the last seven years. \u201cWatching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that,\u201d the filmmaker continued, adding that he was fearless from his stunts but \u201cembodying this character, this is another kind of fearless\u2026 this role could be his most challenging, hire-wire act.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tCruise gushed over his collaboration with I\u00f1\u00e1rritu in return, saying this was \u201cthe kind of movie is why I wanted to make movies.\u201d He added, \u201cThe movie is wild, it\u2019s funny and I can\u2019t wait for you all to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the footage, Cruise as unrecognizable, sporting gray hair, wrinkles and a gut as he struts around his mansion and nurses his sick cat. It\u2019s soon clear that Digger is the billionaire executive of a major company causing an environmental disaster via a methane leak that is threatening to displace millions of people. John Goodman appears as the President, urging Cruise\u2019s character to fix it \u2014 and so he sets out to do so by literally grabbing a shovel. \u201cWe can\u2019t control the course of nature, at least we can control the narrative,\u201d he declares.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, which also stars Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D\u2019Arcy, is being billed as a \u201cComedy of Catastrophic Proportions.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAll I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It\u2019s insane. It\u2019s scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me,\u201d I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said while in\u00a0Cannes<\/a> last year. \u201cBut I don\u2019t like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little. I felt\u00a0Birdman\u00a0was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that. And Tom makes me laugh every single day. He has this total commitment, this total madness,\u201d he added. The film is set for a theatrical release on Oct. 2. <\/p>\n

\n\tCinemaCon, the annual gathering of cinema owners and Hollywood studios, is hosted in Las Vegas by Cinema United, formerly known as the National Association of Theatre Owners.
