CinemaCon handed fans a clear look at The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, naming Jamie Dornan as the new Strider while Andy Serkis directs and returns as Gollum. Familiar magic is back with Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood, joined by Lee Pace, Kate Winslet, and Leo Woodall. Set before The Fellowship of the Ring and arriving December 17, 2027, the film reunites Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, from a script by Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou.

A bold return to Middle-earth

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema just officially unveiled the ensemble for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum at CinemaCon. The film is headed to US theaters on December 17, 2027. The reveal brought back that goosebump feeling, like the first swell of Howard Shore’s score. Familiar heroes return, and a surprising new Strider steps forward (announced at CinemaCon).

Meet the cast: old friends and a new face

The headline is Jamie Dornan as Aragorn, the ranger once carried by Viggo Mortensen. Dornan brings a steady, steel-eyed presence from The Fall and Belfast to a role fans know by heart. Andy Serkis returns as Gollum and directs. Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, with Elijah Wood as Frodo, plus Lee Pace, Kate Winslet, and Leo Woodall in key parts.

Jamie Dornan: Aragorn/Strider

Andy Serkis: Gollum/Smeagol

Ian McKellen: Gandalf

Elijah Wood: Frodo Baggins

Lee Pace: Thranduil

Kate Winslet: Marigol

Leo Woodall: Halvard

One fresh name stands out: Winslet as the mysterious Marigol, while Woodall plays Halvard. The mix suggests new corners of Middle-earth, threaded with the familiar pull of its legends.

A narrative set before the fellowship

Set before The Fellowship of the Ring, the plot follows Aragorn’s covert hunt for Gollum across wild frontiers. Expect ranger craft, moral knots, and the uneasy pull of the Ring’s shadow. The script comes from Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Producers Peter Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens return, a veteran trio with hard-won Middle-earth instincts.

Honoring a groundbreaking legacy

The original trilogy reshaped fantasy cinema, grossing about $3 billion worldwide and collecting 17 Academy Awards. The Return of the King swept 11 Oscars, including Best Picture (2004). Serkis’ motion-capture work, realized with Weta’s artistry, reset expectations for digital performance. This chapter aims to push technique again while keeping character and grit front and center.

What’s next for the franchise?

New Line’s Middle-earth revival already includes the animated The War of the Rohirrim, which hit US theaters in 2024. Prime Video’s The Rings of Power is filming season 3, a parallel thread for fans hungry for lore. Together, they set the stage for The Hunt for Gollum to land big in 2027 (US ticket details will arrive closer to release).

Middle-earth just swapped its most iconic ranger for a face no one saw coming, and two old wanderers…

[27
146,85,46,397
post-393459","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-movies
["GET
