{"id":394393,"date":"2026-04-16T01:12:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T01:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/394393\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T01:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T01:12:09","slug":"the-odyssey-shows-trojan-horse-attack-footage-at-cinemacon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/394393\/","title":{"rendered":"The Odyssey Shows Trojan Horse Attack Footage at CinemaCon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Patron Saint of Movie Theaters has returned to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/cinemacon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cinemacon\" data-tag=\"cinemacon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CinemaCon<\/a>, the exhibition industry\u2019s annual trade show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/christopher-nolan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christopher-nolan\" data-tag=\"christopher-nolan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Nolan<\/a> made his way to Las Vegas to talk up \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-odyssey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-odyssey\" data-tag=\"the-odyssey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Odyssey<\/a>,\u201d his historical drama based on Homer\u2019s Greek epic. Not that he needs to convince exhibitors to schedule any of his films. Movie theater operators adore Nolan because he\u2019s the rare director who can get people to the big screen based on his name alone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNaturally, he was greeted with a standing ovation as he walked on stage at the Colosseum. An introvert, the filmmaker tried to deflect the attention, joking that he\u2019s just happy that he\u2019s not following Steven Spielberg during Universal\u2019s presentation to exhibitors. (Spielberg\u2019s new film \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d was teased later in the afternoon.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe got right to the point, addressing his decision to adapt the original epic for today\u2019s audiences. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and the story chronicles his long and perilous return home after the Trojan War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhy \u2018The Odyssey?\u2019 \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 is a story that has fascinated generation after generation for 3,000 years,\u201d Nolan mused. \u201cIt\u2019s not a story. It\u2019s the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNolan treated exhibitors to an extended look at \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d which opened with Damon\u2019s Odysseus, shirtless on the beach with a burly beard. He\u2019s been gone a long time and admits to Calypso (Charlize Theron) that he \u201ccan\u2019t remember anything before Troy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I have a wife? Children? Maybe a son?\u201d he asks. \u201cIf I had a son, how old would he be now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMost of the footage revolved around \u201cthe story of the horse\u201d \u2014 the famous Trojan horse attack, which the Greeks used as cover to enter the city of Troy at the end of the war. As the massive wooden figure washes up on the beach, thousands of men have to pull the Trojan horse out of the water and onto the sand before they can wheel it into the city. In the tense and thrilling sequence, the Greeks are forced to stay quiet as the Trojans plunge swords into the statue to see if anything was hidden, with one blade even slicing into the face of a hidden soldier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLater, there are shots of Odysseus urging his soldiers to keep rowing through a storm, and then slinging arrows as they launch their full-scale attack in the dark of night. The footage ended with a quick shot of Odysseus and his soldiers as they face the man-eating cyclops Polyphemus; the massive brute picks up a man in his hand before the screen cuts to black. He\u2019s one of many mythical beings \u2014 Cyclops, sirens and Circe among them \u2014 who Odysseus will encounter as he ventures to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlong with Damon, Hathaway, Holland and Theron, the stacked ensemble includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo and Himesh Patel. Given the robust call sheet, Nolan joked there were too many stars to feasibly bring with him to CinemaCon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHow do you go about bringing this to a modern audience? Obviously, we start with the cast,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be quicker for me to tell you who isn\u2019t in the movie. I would have brought them all here, but the massive weight of extraordinary talent would have collapsed the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNolan described a treacherous filming process, which brought them all over the world as they shot across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland and Scotland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis has been an absolute nightmare to film \u2014 but in all the right ways,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had an amazing time.\u201d He singled out his leading man, referring to Damon as his \u201cpartner on this journey\u201d and calling his work \u201cincredible.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHe was there on the boats, up the mountains, in the caves, in the beating sunshine, sideways rain, wind,\u201d Nolan said. \u201cYou\u2019ll be pleased to know how difficult it was. It was meant to be; that\u2019s the nature of this story.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d will be the first movie shot entirely with Imax cameras, a feat that Nolan called his \u201clongest-held ambition.\u201d His prior blockbuster, \u201cOppenheimer,\u201d was particularly huge in Imax, with the premium format contributing a massive 20% of overall box office grosses.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/news\/oppenheimer-imax-70mm-craze-projectors-1235697085\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Some movie lovers even crossed state lines<\/a>\u00a0to see \u201cOppenheimer\u201d in 70mm Imax, selling out those particularly large auditoriums for weeks. Nolan\u2019s other major films include the \u201cDark Knight\u201d trilogy, \u201cInception\u201d and \u201cInterstellar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAs a boy, all I wanted to do was tell large-scale [stories] using that technology, putting the audience into the world,\u201d Nolan said in reference to Imax. \u201cAnd I spent many, many years trying to bring that to fruition, starting with \u2018The Dark Knight,\u2019 back when I was in my 30s. We shot the action sequences [in Imax], but we were never able to shoot the entire film.
