Authorities responded with tear gas and batons, shut schools, throttled mobile internet for five days and arrested at least 50 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Among the outpouring of grief were calls for revenge from some protesters.\u201cThose who oppress Muslims\u2014we will kill them,\u201d one unnamed demonstrator in Srinagar told Reuters on March 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">The unrest prompted authorities to investigate several political figures accused of spreading inflammatory content online. Among them was Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, an influential Shia cleric with a cross-sectarian following.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cSome fools in J&amp;K Police and administration think that by withdrawing\/downgrading my security detail and suspending my Facebook account will stop me from calling out their atrocities. he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">For scholars of South Asian Islam, the reactions in Kashmir reflect a longstanding\u2014though often misunderstood\u2014connection between the region and Iran.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/a5c87a0730f461f9dfe9ac254fd308c23b41da11-640x360.png\" alt=\"Oxford University's Associate Professor Justin Jones\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776348439_721_a5c87a0730f461f9dfe9ac254fd308c23b41da11-640x360.png\" alt=\"Oxford University's Associate Professor Justin Jones\" class=\"ImageZoom-module-scss-module__AqPnHG__zoomedImage\" style=\"transform:translate(0px, 0px) scale(1);transition:transform 0.15s ease\" draggable=\"false\"\/><\/p>\n<p>100%<\/p>\n<p>Oxford University&#8217;s Associate Professor Justin Jones<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Justin Jones, a specialist in modern Islam in South Asia at Oxford University, said that for most Indian Shias the Islamic Republic functions primarily as a political symbol rather than a direct religious authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThe actual political thought of Velayat-e Faqih doesn\u2019t cut very deep in much of India,\u201d he said, referencing the Islamic Republic\u2019s central doctrine of the Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist, founded by Ruhollah Khomeini after Iran\u2019s 1979 revolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s simply a kind of imaginary of Shia power, which has some psychological effect, but maybe not a political one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Kashmir, however, is different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cKashmir is one of the places that has been most receptive to Iranian influence,\u201d Jones said, citing both themes of political justice that resonate with local Shia communities and ideological currents linked to Iran\u2019s doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/8f2752a81baa789345e31649630d88dc995451fd-640x360.png\" alt=\" Javed Beigh, a human rights activist based in Budgam\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776348440_86_8f2752a81baa789345e31649630d88dc995451fd-640x360.png\" alt=\" Javed Beigh, a human rights activist based in Budgam\" class=\"ImageZoom-module-scss-module__AqPnHG__zoomedImage\" style=\"transform:translate(0px, 0px) scale(1);transition:transform 0.15s ease\" draggable=\"false\"\/><\/p>\n<p>100%<\/p>\n<p> Javed Beigh, a human rights activist based in Budgam<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cIran is perceived as the representative of the Muslim world,\u201d human rights activist Javed Beigh told Iran International.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThere was no other Muslim leader perceived as strongly against the United States and its allies as Seyyed Ali Khamenei,\u201d said Beigh, who is a Shia Muslim based in Budgam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">That perception, he added, has also resonated with some Sunni Muslims across the subcontinent, particularly amid Israel\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">A Kashmiri law student who asked not to be identified described two different responses among younger Shias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">One group, he said, views the Islamic Republic as a political system that must survive \u2014 and would find its collapse \u201calmost existentially shattering\u201d. The other sees Iran\u2019s 1979 revolution as a historical process that may endure even if the current regime falls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThey think of it as something in evolution,\u201d he said. \u201cIt might fail temporarily, but they have a strong belief in the possible resurgence and resurrection of the system in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Simon Wolfgang Fuchs, an associate professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who studies Shia Islam in South Asia and the Middle East, said the Islamic Republic\u2019s influence in the region extends beyond said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThe symbolic capital of Iran has not weakened\u2026 for South Asian Shia, Iran has been perceived as someone who stands by them and protects them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">That connection has deepened as Iranian-trained clerics return to South Asia and pilgrims travel through Iran to reach holy sites in Iraq, experiencing the country as part of a broader sacred geography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">The Kashmiri student said many Shias in the region view that geography, stretching from Iran to Iraq, as central to the future of Shia political movements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cIran and Iraq are seen to inhabit the symbols of the sacred geography of the Shiite tradition,\u201d he said. \u201cIf such a movement is going to be reborn, it must be around that geography\u2014not outside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">He estimated that roughly 60 to 70 percent of Kashmiri Shias hold that view: that any future resurgence of the ideology would belong in the Middle East rather than South Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Those ties are reinforced by institutions that operate independently of Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">The Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust, an Iranian-linked organisation active in Kashmir, trains local clerics and funds religious education, according to research by the Middle East Forum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Al-Mustafa International University, headquartered in Qom and funded directly by Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader, operates affiliated seminaries across India and Pakistan whose graduates return to run religious institutions, according to research by United Against Nuclear Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cMany people, even from my village, are still in Iran \u2014 living there, doing business, studying,\u201d Beigh said. \u201cThat\u2019s how you actually develop a strong bond between two communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">For some security analysts, however, those connections raise concerns about political radicalisation.<\/p>\n<p><img ideological loyalty to the Islamic Republic runs deep within the region\u2019s Shia community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThey don\u2019t want modernisation. They don\u2019t want westernisation. They don\u2019t want any regime change in Iran,\u201d he said, arguing that many supporters hope for the Islamic Republic\u2019s survival rather than its replication elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Abhinav Pandya, CEO of the Usanas Foundation, a geopolitical think tank in India, said Tehran\u2019s ideological outreach has fostered what he described as \u201cextraterritorial loyalties\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1eeb1723611174aa94096f0f3ec96af389a29824-640x360.png\" alt=\"Abhinav Pandya of the Usanas Foundation\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776348442_44_1eeb1723611174aa94096f0f3ec96af389a29824-640x360.png\" alt=\"Abhinav Pandya of the Usanas Foundation\" class=\"ImageZoom-module-scss-module__AqPnHG__zoomedImage\" style=\"transform:translate(0px, 0px) scale(1);transition:transform 0.15s ease\" draggable=\"false\"\/><\/p>\n<p>100%<\/p>\n<p>Abhinav Pandya of the Usanas Foundation<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cIncreasingly, the Shia Muslims in India have come under the influence of the Iranian regime,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is very problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Pandya also pointed to contacts between Iran-aligned militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah and anti-India militant networks in the region, citing Indian media reports linking such groups to militant activity in Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">It was a similar concern voiced by Citrinowicz, who said Iran\u2019s student and religious networks in India could potentially serve as recruitment channels.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6ff296c7e8f69e6c7caa2f7adcb22493ce223d48-640x360.png\" alt=\"Danny Citrinowicz, a fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776348443_58_6ff296c7e8f69e6c7caa2f7adcb22493ce223d48-640x360.png\" alt=\"Danny Citrinowicz, a fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv\" class=\"ImageZoom-module-scss-module__AqPnHG__zoomedImage\" style=\"transform:translate(0px, 0px) scale(1);transition:transform 0.15s ease\" draggable=\"false\"\/><\/p>\n<p>100%<\/p>\n<p>Danny Citrinowicz, a fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThe platform they are able to build\u2014through control of religious centres, through academia, through social media\u2014has transformed these places into fertile ground for recruitment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Citrinowicz points to the Islamic Republic\u2019s history of retaliating globally following the killing of its senior figures, with plots disrupted across Africa, Europe and Asia after the assassinations of Qasem Soleimani and Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">&#8220;Nobody should be surprised if you&#8217;ll see in the next couple of weeks or months (Iran) again tries to do something against India.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">Indian officials familiar with the issue, however, say such fears may be overstated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">A former official at India\u2019s National Security Council Secretariat said the solidarity expressed after Khamenei\u2019s killing reflected religious sentiment more than political mobilisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">\u201cThe reverence is more on the religious side than on a struggle side,\u201d he said, describing the protests as a form of collective mourning typical of Shia communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"CustomPortableTextComponents-module-scss-module__peBeZa__paragraph\">While authorities were monitoring the donation drives, he said they did not consider them significant enough to warrant intervention.
