The shower can also spawn impressive fireball events that outshine even the brightest planets, as bigger chunks of cometary debris \u2014 sometimes the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/watch-the-skies\/2014\/03\/25\/bright-basketball-sized-meteor-in-ontario\/#:~:text=Researchers%20from%20Western%20University%20have%20released%20footage,almost%20as%20bright%20as%20the%20full%20moon.\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/watch-the-skies\/2014\/03\/25\/bright-basketball-sized-meteor-in-ontario\/#:~:text=Researchers%20from%20Western%20University%20have%20released%20footage,almost%20as%20bright%20as%20the%20full%20moon.\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">size of a basketball<\/a>, or larger \u2014 forge a flaming path through <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-cbab161c-b07c-4737-9828-4c77cce3072c\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Viewing conditions <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6d6d9590-a0b9-4e82-8331-c623a67d9d11\">The waxing moon will be 40%-lit as the Lyrid meteor shower comes to a peak on the night of April 21-22, when up to 18 shooting stars may be visible brightening the night sky each hour. The lunar disk will set below the western horizon among the stars of the constellation Gemini roughly an hour and a half after midnight, leaving the sky beautifully dark for hunting meteors.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-ffa38d28-1f78-400e-a10b-8963930d8aa1\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>How do I know if the shooting star I saw was a Lyrid?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-04390f5a-69cd-4387-95a6-a68cbf7c1c5c\">Shooting stars belonging to the Lyrid meteor shower appear to streak away from a patch of sky \u2014 known as the shower&#8217;s radiant \u2014 close to the bright star <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21719-vega.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21719-vega.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21719-vega.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vega<\/a>, whose blue-white light can be spotted shining in the constellation Lyra.
