Previously unseen drawings of Winnie-the-Pooh that show the honey-loving bear before he was introduced to generations of readers in the 1926 book have come to light.<\/p>\n
Two preliminary pencil sketches by E H Shepard have been shared for the first time by his family to mark the centenary of one of the most loved books in children\u2019s literature.<\/p>\n
Having been abandoned at the very earliest stage of the book\u2019s creation, the drawings offer a rare glimpse into Shepard\u2019s working process and imagination as he brought AA Milne\u2019s character to life. They depict passages that are familiar to readers but were not accompanied by illustrations in the original published book.<\/p>\n
A pencil drawing, captioned: \u201cClimbing very cautiously up the stream\u201d, shows Pooh and his adventure-loving friends Christopher Robin, Piglet and Owl. It was intended for Chapter VIII, in which Christopher Robin leads an \u201cexpotition\u201d to the north pole.<\/p>\n

In that passage, Milne wrote: \u201c\u2018We are all going on an Expedition,\u2019 said Christopher Robin, as he got up and brushed himself. \u2018Thank you, Pooh.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Going on an Expotition?\u2019 said Pooh eagerly. \u2018I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever been on one of those. Where are we going to on this Expotition?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Expedition, silly old Bear. It\u2019s got an \u2018x\u2019 in it.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Oh!\u2019 said Pooh. \u2018I know.\u2019 But he didn\u2019t really.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another sketch that never made the final book is a delicate study for Chapter III, in which Pooh and Piglet go hunting and nearly catch a Woozle.<\/p>\n
The drawings will be shown at Peter Harrington Rare Books in Dover Street, central London, as part of an exhibition that opens on 17 April.<\/p>\n

Philip W Errington, a senior specialist at Peter Harrington, described the drawings as \u201cvery special\u201d. He said: \u201c[In] these preliminary sketches, Shepard\u2019s putting these first thoughts on paper and there\u2019s an absolute, vibrant creativity going on there.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe skill that he\u2019s got in rendering movement is really quite exceptional. The pencil marks across that page are really beautifully done. You\u2019ve got the rapid creativity plus Shepard\u2019s hallmark movement. These pieces really do leap off the page.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cIt is extraordinarily rare to encounter preliminary drawings of Winnie-the-Pooh that capture what might be called the first moment of inspiration \u2013 the instant where Shepard is thinking through movement, character and narrative in pencil alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said of \u201cClimbing very cautiously up the stream\u201d: \u201cYou can see Christopher Robin at the front. [Pooh] is really very distinct and Piglet is beautifully done, but he\u2019s got a little arrow at the bottom where he\u2019s put \u2018closer\u2019. Perhaps he was having a bit of a problem with how those characters appear on the page. You\u2019ve also got Kanga and Eeyore.\u201d<\/p>\n
