In a journey defined by spiritual homecoming and interreligious bridge-building, Pope Leo XIV concluded a landmark two-day apostolic visit to Algeria on April 14, 2026. The visit, which took place from April 13-14, saw the first Augustinian Pope returning to the geographic and spiritual roots of the Order\u2019s founder, Saint Augustine, in the ancient city of Hippo Regius, modern-day Annaba.<\/p>\n

The pilgrimage was marked by a deep sense of “Easter joy” and fraternal communion. Throughout his time in the country, the Holy Father visited with Augustinian missionary sisters in Algiers and joined with the Augustinian friars at the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Annaba. The first pope to ever visited the Basilica and Algeria.<\/p>\n

Days of Grace and Witness<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Prior General Rev. Joseph Farrell, OSA, noted the profound spiritual atmosphere that permeated the visit. “I give thanks to God for they truly were days of joy and days of grace,” Farrell remarked. <\/p>\n

He highlighted the importance of the witness provided by Augustinian sisters Sr. Esther Paniagua Alonso and Sr. Caridad \u00c1lvarez Mart\u00edn, whose lives exemplified the proclamation of the Gospel message.<\/p>\n

In afternoon of the first day of the apostolic journey of Pope Leo XIV in Algeria, he visited the community of the Augustinian Missionary Sisters in Bab El Oued, where he met six sisters of the congregation and their collaborators at the \u201cWelcome and Friendship Centre.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two sisters were assassinated on 23 October 1994 during the \u201cBlack Decade,” as the Algerian Civil War is known, as they were on their way to Mass.<\/p>\n

Farrell further observed the symbolic power of the Pope celebrating mass at the Basilica of Saint Augustine, which stands prominently on a hill overlooking Annaba. To the local community, the Basilica serves as “a symbol… that peace is possible” and remains a vital “way of creating unity among humanity”.<\/p>\n

Prior to the Mass, he visited the ruins of Hippo and planted an olive tree at the site of the former church of Saint Augustine, following the tradition that Augustine once planted a tree there in honor of his father.<\/p>\n

Unity in Diversity<\/p>\n

The visit also emphasized the role of Saint Augustine\u2019s legacy in fostering dialogue between different faiths. Assistant General Rev. Martin Davakan, OSA, who accompanied the Prior General of the Order during the visit, described the experience as “truly historical” and “an immense blessing”.<\/p>\n

Davakan was particularly moved by the encounters between Christians and Muslims, noting that joint prayers at the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa in Algiers served as a reminder that religion can be a “true sign of unity”. Drawing on the teachings of the North African Doctor of the Church, Davakan stated, “This land of Saint Augustine makes me think every day of him and everything that Algeria has given to the world… he who teaches us that diversity is a richness, not a weakness”. He urged the faithful to continue seeking “unity in diversity” as they walk together.<\/p>\n

A Call for Humility and Peace<\/p>\n

The climax of the journey occurred during the Papal Mass at the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Annaba. In his closing message, Pope Leo XIV described the pilgrimage as a “special gift of God’s providence” granted to the Church through an Augustinian successor of Peter.<\/p>\n

Addressing the global people, the Pope offered a sobering yet hopeful summary of his mission. “God is love; He is the Father of all men and women,” he declared. He warned that the “negative spiral” currently seen in the world “stems from our pride” and called for a return to humility.<\/p>\n

“We need Him and we need His mercy,” the Holy Father emphasized. “Only in Him does the human heart find peace. Only with Him can we all together recognize one another as brothers and sisters, walk the path of justice, integral development, and communion”.<\/p>\n
