Based on the latest Android Canary and Android 17 Beta<\/a> releases, Google is working on a Pixel \u201claptop\u201d of some sort that will feature a \u201cPixel Glow\u201d hardware feature.<\/p>\n About APK Insight: In this \u201cAPK Insight\u201d post, we\u2019ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we\u2019re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We\u2019ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they\u2019ll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.<\/p>\n Android Canary 2604 and Android 17 Beta 4, as well as earlier releases, make reference to a feature called \u201corbit.\u201d In the system Settings app, it\u2019s referred to as \u201clight_animations.\u201d<\/p>\n Pixel Glow<\/p>\n Beta 4 today explicitly names and brands this feature as \u201cPixel Glow.\u201d This hardware capability \u201cuses subtle light and color on the back of your device to inform you of important activity when it\u2019s face down.\u201d<\/p>\n \tAdvertisement – scroll for more content<\/p>\n There\u2019s a clear emphasis on letting you \u201cStay in the moment without losing touch.\u201d Pixel Glow will show these \u201csubtle lights\u201d when a favorite contact calls. One particular implementation detail is how using existing flash notifications will override the new capability.<\/p>\n Pixel Glow will also be active when speaking or \u201cinteracting with Gemini.\u201d It\u2019s pitched as a way to have \u201cHands-free interactions using visual feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n Calls from favorites: Subtle lights when your favorite contacts call you<\/p>\n Speaking with Gemini: Hands-free interactions using visual feedback<\/p>\n Google will let you enable\/disable those features individually, and we\u2019ve enabled an early look at the Settings page. The page warns to \u201cUse Pixel Glow with caution if you\u2019re light sensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n The inclusion in Android 17 suggests Pixel Glow will come with the next Pixel phone. That said, the Pixel 11 series renders<\/a> that have leaked do not show any cutout for lights. Some possible locations could be the Camera Bar or even the \u2018G\u2019 logo.<\/p>\n Integrating Pixel Glow into the Camera Bar would make the signature Pixel hardware element even more iconic.<\/p>\n Pixel laptop<\/p>\n According to our findings, this capability will be available on both Pixel phones and laptops. The aforementioned settings page explicitly checks whether the device type is a desktop or not. Compared to the phone implementation, we don\u2019t have as many details about how Pixel Glow will work on laptops.<\/p>\n However, we\u2019re confident the Gemini visual feedback will be an option on laptops. There\u2019s also an \u201cic_laptop_light\u201d icon in this week\u2019s Android releases:<\/p>\n Google making a new laptop is not surprising in the context of desktop Android.
