{"id":396457,"date":"2026-04-17T05:08:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/396457\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T05:08:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:08:08","slug":"iran-footballers-granted-asylum-in-australia-vow-to-continue-chasing-sporting-dream-iran-womens-football-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/396457\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran footballers granted asylum in Australia vow to continue chasing sporting dream | Iran women&#8217;s football team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The two members of the Iran football team who remained in Australia after the Women\u2019s Asian Cup are beginning their new lives away from the spotlight, even if their dream is to return to elite football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh issued a statement on Friday saying they \u201crespectfully ask\u201d for \u201cprivacy and space\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It has been five weeks since a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/09\/iran-womens-football-team-safety-fears-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">six players and one staff member<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/09\/iran-women-football-team-australia-asian-cup\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">granted asylum in Australia<\/a>, before five of the group returned to Iran leaving two \u2013 Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh \u2013 behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt this stage, our primary focus is on our safety, our health and beginning the process of rebuilding our lives,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are elite athletes, and it remains our dream to continue our sporting careers here in Australia. However, we are not yet ready to speak publicly about our experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The statement was shared by Brisbane Roar, who had invited the players to train with the A-Leagues club last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the time, Roar chief executive, Kaz Patafta, said the offer was about \u201cproviding a supportive environment for them whilst they navigate the next stages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The club has maintained its involvement was simply to offer a comfortable place for Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh to play football rather than seek to sign them to playing contracts, and is now directing inquiries about the players to their public relations firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The pair expressed gratitude to the Australian government for \u201cgranting us humanitarian protection and a safe haven in this beautiful country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe compassion and support shown to us during this challenging time has provided us with hope for a future where we can live and compete in safety,\u201d they said. \u201cWe also thank the dedicated Home A\ufb00airs sta\ufb00 who have supported us in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Iranian women\u2019s football team found themselves subject to criticism in Iran when they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/03\/iran-women-football-team-decline-to-sing-national-anthem-before-asian-cup-tie\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did not sing the national anthem<\/a> before their first match at the Asian Cup, and there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/06\/iran-womens-football-team-national-anthem-protection-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fears for their safety when they returned home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The situation triggered an outpouring of support for the players, led by the Iranian community in Australia, who attended the team\u2019s Queensland hotel and at one stage blocked the departure of the team\u2019s bus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh acknowledged the help they have received from the Iranian community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of the Iranian diaspora community in Australia,\u201d they said. \u201cYour support has made us feel welcome and less alone as we navigate this transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Interest in the players\u2019 welfare was rekindled this week when their former teammate and captain, Zahra Ghanbari, had her assets frozen by Iranian officials and she was dubbed a \u201ctraitor\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The assets were released this week reportedly after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/apr\/14\/iran-releases-assets-of-womens-football-team-captain-in-australia-asylum-drama\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ca declaration of innocence following her change in behaviour\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The two members of the Iran football team who remained in Australia after the Women\u2019s Asian Cup are&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":396458,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[85,46,105],"class_list":{"0":"post-396457","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-sports","8":"tag-il","9":"tag-israel","10":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/396457","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=396457"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/396457\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/396458"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=396457"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=396457"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=396457"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
