Dave Grohl<\/a> has shared more insight into why Josh Freese was abruptly let go as the Foo Fighters<\/a>\u2019 drummer, saying: \u201cWe know what feels best for our band\u201d.<\/p>\n

Freese joined the band as their touring drummer in 2023 following the sudden passing of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022<\/a>. He toured with them throughout 2024, and in May last year Grohl and co. announced that he had been let go \u2013 a move that the sticksman said he was \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cdisappointed\u201d by.<\/a><\/p>\n

It was Ilan Rubin who took on the role of sticksman<\/a>, with him and Freese swapping groups; Rubin left Nine Inch Nails to join Foos<\/a>, and Freese returned to work with Trent Reznor<\/a> and co.<\/p>\n

Freese has spoken out a few times about the sudden departure from Foos, saying he is still unsure of exactly why he was let go<\/a>, revealing that he didn\u2019t fully \u2018resonate\u2019 with their music<\/a>, and telling fans that \u201cno one should feel sorry\u201d for him.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since announcing their 12th studio album, \u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019<\/a> \u2013 set for release on April 24 \u2013 Foos frontman Grohl has touched upon the decision to kick Freese out of the line-up briefly, but not gone into much detail as to why the decision was made.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Zane Lowe<\/a>, he said that while they had a \u201cgreat time\u201d working with him, they ultimately thought they needed to go for \u201ca new direction\u201d \u2013 adding that the drummer\u2019s comments about the music not \u201cresonating\u201d were \u201creally important\u201d into understanding the decision.<\/p>\n

In a separate interview with The Guardian<\/a>, bassist Nate Mendel said<\/a>: \u201cWe made a decision that it was best for all parties. To get into the personal details [with Freese] of why that didn\u2019t necessarily sync up, just didn\u2019t seem like it was going to benefit anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, when asked about the decision to change drummers arose again in a new interview, Grohl went into more depth, adding that the line-up ultimately depends on the \u201cconnection\u201d that the members have with each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cA drummer\u2019s playing is based on feel,\u201d Grohl told The Irish Times<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s all drumming is: feel. It\u2019s hard to define when you\u2019re playing with someone and it feels \u2018right,\u2019 or when you\u2019re playing with someone who feels \u2018really good,\u2019 and then you\u2019re playing with someone and it feels \u2018fucking amazing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIt\u2019s personality, it\u2019s your connection, your rhythm that you have together\u2026 It\u2019s just a combination, or a recipe \u2013 when you\u2019re cooking something and it says, \u2018Salt and pepper to taste\u2019 at the end of the recipe; that\u2019s defined by you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concluding, he shared: \u201cWe know what feels best for our band.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019<\/a> is due for release on April 24 via Roswell Records\/Columbia Records, and earlier this year Grohl revealed that the album was stacked with \u201cuptempo\u201d and \u201cnoisy, loud bangers\u201d that feel like they\u2019re from \u201cthe old days\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Their latest single from the LP is \u2018Of All People\u2019<\/a>, which they initially showcased at their recent run of intimate UK and Ireland shows<\/a> in Dublin<\/a>, London<\/a> and Manchester in February.<\/p>\n

Following these intimate shows, the band will embark on their European \u2018Take Cover\u2019 tour<\/a> this summer, which includes two concerts at Anfield stadium in Liverpool (find any remaining tickets here<\/a>). From there, they have North American dates over the summer and autumn<\/a>, too, and as well as Australia and New Zealand shows in 2026 and 2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n
